Tuberculosis In University
Students
Drs. J. Arthur Myers. Ruth E.
Boynton. and Harold S. Diehl.
of the University of Minnesota
r e c e n tly re
ported that ac
tive tubercu
losis still can
be found in
some freshmen
entering a uni
versity. The
tuberculin
skin test is the
nr Alvarp sensitive ciag
nostic criterion,
sometimes calling attention to
an infection before it shows up
in x-ray films. Some of the stud
ents in medical school get the
disease from patients in the hos
pitals. The persons with the
heaviest infection have to be hos
pitalized for six months or more,
while they are treated with the
new drugs.
A few have so little trouble
that they can be allowed to go
on with their work, perhaps
after the production of an art
ificial pneumothorax. In this op
eration, air is injected into one
side of the chest cavity so 2S
to collapse, temporarily, the af
fected lung. This puts it at rest
and allows the tubercles to heal.
Morning Stiffness In Muscles
As Drs. Sidney Cobb, W. R
Merchant and Theodore Rubin,
of the University of Pittsburgh
recently pointed out, many per
sons have spells in which they
wake up in the morning feeling
stiff. They may have to walk
around for a while in order to
limber up. and then perhaps they
are well for the rest of the day
Often a similar stiffness is both
ersome after the person has been
sitting in a chair for a while.
He (she) limps a bit when he
gets up, but after a minute or
two he is waling well enough
Persons with this symptom
usually have a tendency to fib
rostis or bursitis or arthritis cf
some kind. Often this story of
soreness and stiffness and pain,
coining in the morning enables
the physician to say that the
trouble is arthritic in origin.
