American Jets Fly Oyer Seoul
Seoul 'TP American jet
fighters and atomic bombers
swept over South Korea today
in a morale-building demonstra
tion that underlined V S. deter
mination to match the Commu
nist military buildup in the
north.
Four fleek swept-wing F100
Super.sabres flashed over Seoul
from the south this morning and
were erected by deliehted cheers
and happy laughter from Ko
reans. Two formations of B57 twin
jet bombers roared over the city
this afternoon. The people of
rred city, watched
from streets and rooftops, clap-
hands and pointed in de-
at the groups ol three
planes each.
ped
lieht
High in the sky over the
bombers three of the all-weather
FlOOs rolled and flashed their
silver wings in the bright sun.
They dipped over President
Syngman Rhee's mansion on a
hillside overlooking the capital
and then flashed past to the
north.
A few hours before, the Re
public of Korea drfenyp ministry
lifted the alert over its armed
forces which had been in force
since last week.

Raynaud's Disease
In Raynaud's disease a high

blood v e ssels
in one or more
f i n g ers that
the finger gets

white, with
hardly any
blood in it.
Sometimes the
Airarn linger nuns,
and in the worst cases, because
of the lack of blood, little ul
cers form around the finger
nails. In some cases, the toes al
so turn white.
The "storm" comes out of the
nervous system and travels down
what are called sympathetic
nerves. In the very worst cases,
an expert nerve surgeon can cut
certain sympathetic nerves in
the neck to make the hands
warm again, but the results have
not always been good, and some
times the person operated on
has been condemned to suffer
great and constant pain. Because
of this and other reasons, most
neurologists are not keen about
ordering the operation.
Usually, the best thing that the
patient can do is to wear thick,
fur-lined gloves, especially in
the winter. Sometimes the pat
ient could help herself much if
she could learn to live with much
less tension in her emotional
life. Some of the patients have
told me of getting the disease
right- after the loss of a loved
husband or mother or child
threw them into a highly nervous
and unhappy state.
Prolapse of the Lining of tha
Stomach
For 40 years or so x-ray men
have noticed that sometimes a
little of the inner lining of the
stomach "prolapses" or projects
slightly into the duodenum,
which is the first bit of bowel
just beyond the outlet of the
stomach. For 40 or 50 years no
one paid much attention 1o this
prolapse, and no one did any
thing about it. My associates and
I at the Mayo Clinic never did
anything about it because we
never could satisfy our selves
that there were any symptoms
that could definitely and always
be ascribed to the prolapse.
Then a number of men here
and there got excited about the
peculiarity and dec ided that,
whenever they saw it, they
should order an operation for it.
The future will tell whether this
is wise or only a passing fad. All
I know is that if I found I had
a prolapsed stomach lining, and
had no symptoms. I certainly
would not be operated on. If
I had the prolapse and some in
digestion, I would wait for some
time to see if perhaps the symp
toms would go away by them
selves. Before jermi tting an
operation I would have to be
in much pain, and I would want
to be very sure that I didn't have
some other cause for the symp
itoms, besides the prolapse.
Because all mv life I have
been a student of medical his J
tory, I know that we doctors
have had a great tendency every
so often to fasten onto some little
bodily peculiarity, and to hope
against hope that by cutting it
out we could cure a lot of peo
ple. For instance, in years past
we thought a dropped right kid
ney or a retroverted uterus, a
silent fibroid, or a sore tail-bone
should be operated on. Hund
reds or thousands of operations
were performed for the supposed
disease, and decided that it was
only a harmless peculiarity of
some men and women.
One cannot blame surgeons
much for doing this because the
pressure on them to do some
thing that may cure neurotic
and utterly miserable persons is
so great. Many persons insist on
being operated on when
shouldn't be.
