Several times a year I have
to write about Hodgkins' disease j
because so many people ask
about it. A
young man
will get the
d i s e ase and
then his un-'
happy pareits
pare nts will ,
will suffer an
agony of wor
ry as to what
it is and
what chance
the boy has of recovering. Act
ually, Hodgkins' disease is some
thing like a cancer. The dif
ference is that usually the no
dules appear all over the body
about the same time. They may
show up first in the sides of the
neck, and then an x-ray film
may show that there is plenty
of the material in the chest cav
ity. There may be some in the
arm-pits, in the groin, and there
may be some in the abdomen.
The cause appears to be a vi
rus, for which there is no specific
drug treatment. The nodules
melt away like magic under x
ray treatment, and I have seen
the patient then stay well for as
long as eight years before he
staried to get trouble again.
Thei he came back with daily
fever and much itching of his
skin.
There are some drugs like
ThioTEPA which helps, and I
hope that before long we will
have a drug that will really cure
these peopie.
A Sore 'Tail Bone'
Dozens of people- ask what to
do for a sore tail bone, and one
answer is. don't have it operated
on. Years ago, surgeons used to I
takes these little bones out, but
the results must have been about
100 per cent poor because today
the operation is no longer done.
In many cases the pain around j
the little tail bone is nervous in
origin: there then is no sign of
arthritis or other disease in the
region. In some cases there may
be a little fibrositis, perhaps stir
red up by a fall in which the
patient sat down hard. Usually
the best thirg to do is to wait
until the pain goes away. Hot
baths and aspirin may help.
Achondroplasic Dwarfs
Many unhappy mothers ask me
what can be done for an achond
roplasic dwarf and I have to
say, I don't know, and I rather
doubt if any treatment will ever
be found because, by the time
the child is born, the harm is
done. Something has gone wrong
in the development of the long
bones in the arms and the legs.
The body is well formed, but
the head is usually a bit too
large. Tbese children are often
bright; they can earn their liv-

I was just reading an article
on the inheritance of this trouble
in Northern Ireland, written by
Dr. A C. Stevenson. He say that
in most cases the trouble is
thought to be a "mutation." This
means that one of the genes,
which has to do with the growth
of the ends of the long bones,
mutates or changes. There is
another type of achondroplasia
which can run through several
generations of a family. In this
type, several brothers and sist
ers will have the defect. The
disease appears in many animals
such as dachshunds.
If an achondroplasic child gets
past infancy, he (she) is likely
to be strong all his days. There
seems to be nothing wrong with
him except for his bones.
