Harvey I was an only son
and my father died when I was
10, so I've always had very
close ties with my mother. I
expected her to be quite upset
when I married, but she didn't
seem to be. In fact, she seemed
glad about the whole thing.
Shortly after we were mar
ried, my wife began to tell me
that my mother had said certain
nasty things to her. Adele claim
ed my mother humiliated her
about her appearance and her
housekeeping whenever thev
were alone together. I was so
angry that I wouldn't speak to
my mother and refused to see
her.
Then I got the shock of my
life. My wife said she had ex
aggerated the whole thing be
cause she was jealous. I went
to my mother to apologize. But
mother says she can't forgive
either of us.

sheriff of Jackson County. Oregon,

to be kind and friendly, but ev

I didn't expect anything bet
ter of Adele, but I certainly

that I am not the sort to give in
to any nasty expressions to any
one. I feel that Harvey has made
a big mistake in this marriage.
It is still not too late to undo
the damage. They don't have
children yet. Harvey hasn't been
happy since his marriage. A
friend of his told me that he
has admitted he found marriage
very disappointing. Why can't
we discuss these things?

The Council Judging from
Mrs. E. N 's harsh statements
about Adele and the marriage,
it is reasonable to guess that
Adele exaggerated at least as
much in her confession as in
her original statements.
This mother may not be "the
sort to give in to any nasty
expressions," but the hostility
revealed in her statement may
have come through to Adele
in more subtle ways.
Adele may have built up de
tails in her own mind to give
some foundation to the uncom
fortable feeling she had about
her mother-in-law's attitude.
But when she saw what a seri
ous rift this caused between mo
ther and son, she probably be
came overwhelmed with guilt
and retracted. The retraction, in
which she took all the blame
on herseli, may well have been
as exaggerated as her early ac
cusations. Mrs. E. N. would do well to
take an example from Adele
and bow her head in shame at
her own petty jealousy and her
attempt to meddle in a deep, im
portant relationship. She should
leave her son to work out what
ever difficulties he has with his
wife in privacy, adding no fuel
to any discontent that may ex
ist. Harvey's expectation that his
mother would be "quite upset' j
at his marriage shows a good ;
deal of guilt and confusion in his
own fellings toward his mother
and his wife. This leaves room
for them to wrangle over him.
There is no reason why he can't
love each of these women fully
without giving either of them
cause for jealousy.

pointed Frank Brewster, Seattle,
as chairman of the union's pow
erful 11-state Western Confer
ence, apparently quashing for
the time being a refrom element
bent on ousting the embattled
labor leader.
At the opening session of the
conference's 21st annual conven
tion, John M. Annand of the
Southern California Joint La
bor Council read a letter from
Beck stating that he had again
named Brewster to the chair
manship as an officer "in whom
I have complete confidence."
Beck said he was not here in
person because he had not been
invited. :
Beck, sitting on the sidelines
in Seattle, defended by letter
his own past record and said
that despite all the bad public
ity during March, April and
May this year, the teamsters
added 49,597 new members.
