Cost of Living
Expected To Set
Record Tuesday
Washington W The cost
of living is expected to set an
all time record Tuesday for the
ninth month in a row when the
government's consumer price in
dex for May is slated to come
out.
Government officials predict
it will show another rise from
the record set in April, making
the ninth successive month liv
ing costs have broken all pre
vious records.
Pay Raises Du
The expected new peak will
bring with it pay raises of at
least 3 to 4 cent an hour for
300,000 workers and possibly
smaller boosts for 100,000 more.
These are persons whose union
wage contracts contain "escala
tor" clauses providing for raises
or pay cuts as the government
price index rises or falls.
The consumer price index
rose in April to 119.3 per cent
of the 1947-49 price average,
which is used as a basis for com
parison. That is an overall price
rise of almost 20 per cent in the
past 8-10 years.
Federal experts agree general
ly with predictions of U.S.
Chamber of Commerce officials
that prices will continue to rise
through the rest of this year,
though probably not as rapidly
as during the last half of 1956.
Biggest Increases
The current upward push in
living costs began around April,
1956. The biggest increases
since then have been in autos
and auto repairs, despite dis
counts on new cars; public
transportation fares; household
fuels with the Suez Canal oil
crisis a factor; meats, poultry
and fish; cereals and bakery
produce; dairy products; medi
cal care costs; household opera
tions costs, with laundry and
dry cleaning and other service
charges important; shoes; per
sonal care, particular haircuts;
and reading and recreation.
The famous opera "Madame
Butterfly," was generally pro
nounced as a absolute failure
when it was given its first pub
lie performance.

Hell Necessary,
Graham Declares
New York 0? Evangelist
Billy Grlaham said Sunday night
Hell is necessary to keep man
from sin as the electric chair is
necessary as a deterrent to mur
der. Graham discussed his concept
of hell before some 18.300 per
sons in Madison Square Garden.
The North Carolina preacher
said he did not know what hell
was like "but I know the word
fire is used figuratively in the
Bible."
"I took my degree in college
anthropology," he said. "We
never did find a tribe in the
world that did not believe in
God and redemption. Hell is
needed to restrain man from sin
take away the fear of jails and
electric chairs and New York
would become a hell overnight.
Let the gangsters into heaven
and they'd make a pig pen out of
it."
Graham said God does not
send you to hell. He offers a way
of salvation but that each indi
vidual selected his own road. He
warned that those attending his
crusade had a chance for re
demption if they did not wait
too long.
"One minute after death And
it'll be too late," Graham said.
"For many the death bed will be
too late."
"Many ministers have distort
ed the concept of hell," he said.
"Others have taken the Bible
apart and fixed it to agree with
their own notions."
Rocket Program
To Star! Monday
Washington HP The Navy
announced today it will begin
the United States rocket pro
gram for the International Geo
physical Year next Monday with
the first of a series of 14 rocket
firings off the Southern Cali
fornia coast.
The firings are scheduled to
continue for the next two or
three months.
"Dan" rockets, a combination
of a Deacon rocket and a Nike
booster, will be fired from San
Nicolas Island on the range of
the naval Air Missile Test Cen
ter at Point Mugu.
The Navy said each of the re
search rockets will be fitted
with ultra-violet and X-ray de
tectors to measure the intensities
of these radiations from solar
"flares." It described solar
flares as "tremendous outbursts
of energy from a region of the
sun near a sun spot, which inter
fere with short wave and broad
cast radio."
The rockets are designed to
reach peak altitudes of about 80
miles. They will transmit data
on solar flares, ultra-violet and
X-rays for about three minutes
of each flight.
These measurements are ex
pected ot provide new informa
tion about the distribution of
energy within the flares and the
processes by which the flare
emissions interact with the
earth's atmosphere.

Alcorn Says Civil Rights Sold
Out for Votes on Hells Canyon
Washington m Republi
can National Chairman Meade
Alcorn charged Sunday that six
"self-styled liberal Democrats"
sold out civil rights in the Sen
ate last week to win southern
Democratic support for the Hells
Canyon dam bill.
Sen. Mike Mansfield (D-Mont.)
Senate Democratic whip and
acting majority leader, prompt
ly denied the charge. He said
there was "no deal of any kind,
sort or nature and there were
no trades on the part of any
Democrat with any other Demo
crat for votes."
Those accused by Alcorn of
having made "a deal to swap
off civil rights for Hells Canyon"
were Sens. Wayne Morse (D
Ore), John F. Kennedy CD
Mass.), Warren G. Magnuson
(D-Wash.), James E. Murray
(D-Mont.), Joseph C. O'Mahoney
(D-Wyo.) and Mansfield.

New York HP A Los Ange

earlier this year, won S16.000
Sunday night on "The $64,000
Challenge. 55
Al Einfrank, who lost his rela
tives, friends and nearly his wife
when he missed the top question
on "The S64.000 Question" last
January, partially redeemed
himself on its sister show by
defeating his challenger in a
geography category.
The contestants played under
new rules in which the chal
lenger and champion each are re
quired to rule on whether an op
ponent's answers are correct.
They are eliminated either by
answering a question incorrectly
or failing to recognize an incor
rect answer by the opponent.
In another match, jockey Billy
Pearson, Pasadena, Calif., tied
with Mrs. Jane Wilson, a New
York City housewife, model and
artist, at $8,000 in a Renaissance
art category.
In a third match, 11-year-old
Robert Strom, who won $192,000
on the "Question" tied at the
$1,000 level with another 11-year-old

groups for years showed their
true colors" when they backed
a move to send the civil rights
bill to the Senate Judiciary
Committee which has bottled
up civil rights legislation.
The move was defeated Thurs
day, 45 to 39. A move will be
made sometime after July 8 to
bring the civil rights bill up for
vote. Sen. Allen J. Ellender ID
La.) has warned that the move
will be met with a southern
filibuster.
Alcorn noted in a statement
that the day after the civil rights
vote the Senate passed a Democratic-sponsored
bill to build a
government-financed high dam
in the Hells Canyon region of
the Snake river.
He recalled that all of the
Democrats he named, except
Kennedy, were sponsors of the
Hells Canyon bill.
Three Change Position i
"These senators were joined
in support of Hells Canyon by
more than a dozen anti-civil
rights southern Democrat sena
tors, five of whom had in other
years voted against Hells Can-
yon," Alcorn said.
"When it came to a choice be
tween free-wheeling New Deal
spending and civil rights, the
northern Democrat '1 i b e r a 1 s'
chose spending," he said. "This
is an object lesson in political
double-standard morality. The
people who were sold out will
not forget it."
Mansfield, defending northern
and southern Democrats alike,
noted that three Republicans
Sens. Margaret Chase Smith
(Me.). Edward 3. Thye (Minn.)
and George Aiken (Vt.) chang
ed their positions on Hells Can
yon from last year and voted
