Iran Court Martial
To Try Bandit Gang
Charged in Ambush

dit leader Dad Shah, is still at

The court martial will be con
ducted by Cen. Hossein Azemou
dah, army pftsecutor - general
who in 1954 participated in the
trial of anti-British ex-Premier
Mohammed Mossadegh.
American observers will be in
vited to the trial, to be h i
s;f;the Tehran s army divisional
headquarters.
Charges against the bandits in-
elude murder, robbery, and arm
: ed insurrection. Conviction of
j any one of the charges would
mean execution by firing squad
Dad Shah, unless caught in
the meantime, will be tried in
; absentia.

villagers and burned a village
last month, were dismissed as
' unfounded by security officials

handed over by Pakistan auth
orities this month, after lengthy
extradition procedures.
A group of 40 persons, includ
ing 13 women and five children
is being held at Tehran's mili
tary police headquarters. Army
sources said the children and
most of the women will be sent
to welfare organizations.
But Dad Shah's wife will be
kept under strong guard until
the end of the court martial. She
is alleged to have aided her hus
band in the killings.

Eghbai, has recommended no
mercy for the defendants and
asked that they be made an ex
ample.

Such was the bewildering na
ture of ctii last global war, that
for the first time in warfare more
than 100.000 antlered reindeer
were pressed into service and
with telling effect, setting a re
markable record in the Arctic
circle where in snow or bog no
other animal could match their
performance, much less ma
chines. His only rival in the Arctic
was the Alaskan Eskimo dogs
either malemutes or huskies,
vufco were able to carry 65-pound
packs and go four or five days,
without food if necessary, with
out showing any sign of wasting
awayriyider the strain.
For the beginner, the splay
hoofed reindeer is not easy to
operate. It it capable of fantas-

A reindeer guide has reins of a
sort but he glides his charges
mostly with verbal commands
and shouts which never seem to
sound the same. Given the right
authoritative inflection, the
reindeH follows the orders punc
tually, otherwise he just stands
there immobile and no power
this side of the open grave will
move him out of his tracks.
The Finns were first to exploit
the ttramatic advantages of the
reindeer in snow in winter and
b0Jgy tundra in summer. When
Russia's wheeling equipment
stalled on the snow-covered Fin
nish frontier, the Finns rode atop
the snowcrust with reindeer
the animal's big splayed hoofs
giving it amazing traction and
weight distribution; or when the
summer sun thawed the snow
and machines mired in the bot
tomless goo. the reindeer ran
easily atop the tundra, travers
ing both snow and bogs like the
camel crosses the desert.
With a string of 9 or 10 of
these antlered beasts both
males and females grow a new
set of antlers yearly and shed
them in midwinter the Finns
were able to move up to two-ton
loads of military supplies on
rough wooden sleds for distances
exceeding 40 miles a day.
100-Mile Foray
Or. on a scouting-raid, five or
six Finnish white-clad ski pa
trols could join and make a 100
mile foray behind the enemy's
supply lines during the long
night, strike with swiftness and
efficiency, and make good their
escape. Unlike mechanized snow
mobiles and weasels, the only
sound was the faint ankle-clicking
of the reindeer as they ran
across the snow and glided into
the silent forests at 25 miles an
hour.
It took the Reds more than a
year to learn their lesson on the
Finnish frontier. When they did
they mastered it and took not
only a leaf but the whole book
of reindeer tactics and threw it
at the Nazis in the Murmansk
area when the Nazis tried to cut
off that vital Allied port of sup

Like the Finns, the Russians
found the fleet reindeer could
whisk them to any sector of the
frozen north, despite the crudest
of blizzards, strike swiftly with
in a radius of 700 miles within a
week, and then melt back into
the southern forests before the
Nazi enemy could gather himself
to see with what he had been
hit and by whom.
Handily, too, on the way these
reindeer supplied the raiders
with milk rich in butterfat and
when occasion demanded, with
meat.
Similarly in other theaters,
when rations expired often the
beasts of burden saved them
from starvation and so camels
were eaten in Africa, oxen in
Burma, mules in Bataan, horses
in Russia, dogs in Germany.
The boo-hoo department: Dur
ing the past month, I had to eat
a big helping of crow. I placed
Harney Peak the highest in
the U. S. east of the Rockies in
North Dakota. Of course it is in
the Black Hills of South Dakota
where I have camped. (And Pres
ident Coolidge fished for trout
with white kid gloves on, yet.)

Festival Dancers
Need Equipment
Ashland Marcia Thayer,
dance director for the Shake
spearean festival, is looking for
full length mirrors and a phono
graph that will play at 33 1-3
speed.
"We need the record player to
provide music at rehearsals, and
the full-length mirrors are very
useful in dance practise," she
added. "We hope someone in
this area can help us find them."
An expanded dance program
is being offered with the festi
cal this year, including special
numbers created for "Henry
VIII," "As You Like It." "Two
Gentlemen of Verona," and
"Pericles." Festival Dancers will
entertain' andiences with danc
ing-on4he-green prior to each
performance of "Othello" and
"Two Gentlemen."
The group is also slated to
perform during the annual
"Bard's Hey Day." July 21 and
at opening night festivities on
Aug. 1. A special dance concert
is planned for Suntiay, Aug. 18.
