Pageantry with Meaning
A I ost American folk dancing has its roots in European tales of
boy meets girl. But out in the Southwest, where the descendants of
the first Americans carry on their colorful traditions, the men do all
the dancing and the symbolism goes back to less frivolous roots of food
and drink, life and death.
Indian tribal dances are revived yearly at such festivals as the
FlagstafT (Ariz.) Pow Wow, July 1 to 4, and the Gallup (N. M.) Inter
tribal Ceremonial, Aug. 8 to 11. Neighbors and tourists may see Adam
Red Deer, a Taos Indian, gyrate through the strenuous hoop dance,
originally performed by young bucks to show their stamina and prove
to their elders they had come of hunting age.
Other blood-stirring dances, usually accompanied by tribal chants
and drums, include the Pueblos' eagle dance, showing the kinship
between man and the fierce, proud bird of the sky, and the deer dance,
depicting the sacrifice made by animals for their human brothers.
Taos youths demonstrate stamina for elders in strenuous hoop dance.
