Crusade Sets Record,
Billy Graham Says
New York (IP1 Billy Graham
said Thursday night that "more
than twice as many persons have
given their lives to Christ in our
New York Crusade than in any
other of our American cru
sades." The North Carolina evangel
ist told a Madison Square Gar
den audience of 16,000 that in
the first five weeks of his cru
sade more than 20.000 persons
had made "decisions for Christ.''
Thursday night's 559 decisions
brought the total to 20.611 since
the crusade began May 15.
Graham said that "It's a sac
red and holy obligation for us
not to publish names of those
who give their lives to Christ
here, but if I were to tell you
the names of some of those who
have come forward, names
known by all of you, it would
shake this city."
up this week to the morning after
a "miracle." In some respects it's
beer, a headache.
Benny Hooper Jr., 7, fell into
a sandy well hole five weeks ago
Thursday night. The eyes and
prayers of the nation were fo
cused on the yard behind the
Hooper's neat little gray house
as hundreds of rescuers fought
shifting sand and exhaustion for
24 hours. Benny was saved.
"How can we possibly thank
everybody for what they did,"
Mrs. Hooper said today. "We are
so happy at what all of them
did."
But the after-effects have be
come more devastating than the
destruction of the Hooper gar
den beneath the feet of the res
cuers and the tires of their
trucks. There are trouble that
were born of public kindness as
well.
"If I sat down to think about
them all at once, I'd be in Islip
right now." Mrs. Hooper said,
referring to a nearby state men
tal hospital.
Big Doctor Bill
At the top of the list is a
SI. 500 bill from Dr. Joseph Kris,
who stood at the top of the well
throughout Benny's imprison
ment, directing life-saving oxy
gen to his sandy prison, and
tended him through a subse
quent week in the hospital.
"I don't know what to think,"
Mrs. Hooper said. "If we had
their money, we would try to
pay it, but you can't get blood
from a stone."
Hooper, a road worker, brings
home S62 a week. Mrs. Hooper
earns an additional S43 working
nights as a telephone operator.
She has been unable to work
since the "miracle" there've
been too many other things to
have totalled less than $400. Mrs
Hooper said. That has made up
her salary and just a bit more,
she said.
There have been two SI, 000
payments for television appear
ances. One is a trust fund which
cannot be touched until Benny
is 21. The other the Hoopers gave

Asia Flu Reported
At Newport Navy Base
Newport, R.I. rtP) The
Navy today reported a "mild
outbreak of Oriental influenza
at the Newport Naval Base."
The Navy said the flu which
has swept the Far East has been
detected on eight of 110 Newport-based
ships since June 3.
An estimated 500 personnel
have been stricken, the Navy
said.
The Navy statement said:
"The outreak is mild since
only 2 per cent of 27.500 sailors
in the Newport-based ships have
been effected.
"After an intricate series of
laboratory tests the flu virus
was determined this week to be
the same type as in spreading
through the Asiatic countries
and along the West Coast of the
United States."

Car That Runs
Benny has received boxes of
bubble gum, comic books and
small toys and three big presents,
his mother said, a car that really
runs, a bicycle and a valuable
German shepherd dog.
The result "Our insurance
has gone up," Mrs. Hooper said.
"There have been so many
sightseers, and the children all
want to ride in the car," she
explained. The family has had to
increase its liability insurance.
The insurance man has urged
that they fence the yard in addi
tion, she said. They haven't de
cided what to do about that.
One other gift the family did
accept the offer of a Pennsyl
vania resort owner for a nine
day vacation on the house.
"Our family doctor told us to
go." Mrs. Hooper said, and they
did. But they came home Sunday
to the morning after.
"It's been a bad week," she
said. "Our car broke down. And
1 had to have a tooth pulled in
Pennsylvania. That cost us $40."

Swedish press attache Hugo
