Teacher Quizzed
By Refugees
Camp Kilmer, N.J. W
Cecelia Szakacs, a pretty bru
nette school teacher who took a
leave of absence from her class
room for a mercy mission, dis
covered she still was the target
for questions.
Miss Szakacs. a physical edu
cation instructor at the high
school in Glen Ridge. N.J., last
December left to serve as a Red
Cross volunteer in the program
to help Hungarian refugees.
Upon her return aboard a re
fugee transport from a tour of
refugee facilities in Europe,
she became the first Red Cross
volunteer to complete the cir
cuit. The experience was stimulat
ing. Miss Szakacs said, although
it often was just one long ques-tion-and-answer
session.
Miss Szakacs, who left her
Hungarian birthplace at the age
of 10 and still speaks the lan
guage fluently, was peppered
with questions during her tour
of refugee camps as a briefing
officer on American life.
"Where can you raise carrots
in the United States?" she cited
as a good example of the quer
ies tossed at her.
"Mothers asked, 'How soon
can our children get into Ameri
can schools?' " continued Miss
Szakacs. "The first questions
young men asked me were 'How
soon can we go to work? Where
are the best job opportunities?"
Miss Szakacs did her best on
all questions, but she admitted
being thrown for a loss occa
sionally. "I only wish I had armed my
self with an encyclopedia about
the United States." she sighed.
The desires of the refugees
were not always for food and
clothing, she found.
"The demand for English dic
tionaries far exceeded the sup
ply." she said. "We also had to
dispel the mistaken notion
among some of the refugees
that they would have to work to
pay for their passage to the
United States."

al mixed drink
competition.
Aline Mosby For the
s o u t hwestern regional finals,
various film celebrities and mem
bers of the Hollywood press were
called upon to judge original
bourbon recipes submitted by
bartenders from Southern Calif
ornia and Arizona.
Hollywood has seen parties
for everything from supermark
ets to Sophia Loren, but there
nas never been another one
where guests from Liberace to
starlet Vikki Dougan sat in a
dignified meeting room at the
Beverly -Wilshire Hotel and
thoughtfully tasted drinks.
Between sips the judges,
frowns of intensity on their
faces, marked ballots.
Purpose Explained
'The purpose of this contest
is to get people back into the
bars for mixed drinks," explain
ed Mike O'Brien, a vice presi
dent of the Early Times distil
lery. "We've lost a lot of customers.
No, not from television, but the
art of the mixed drinks has fad
ed. Most people get used to
ordering just Scotch and soda
or bourbon and water. They for
get that drinks can be pleasant
for the taste and the color. The
bartenders hardly have a chance
to, well, create.
"They get frustrated from
making just simple highballs."
In the contest were recipes for
before dinner drinks, after din
ner drinks and coolers. They
were in little glasses and fat glas
ses. The concoctions were red,
green, pink, brown, blue, purple.
The judges were asked to mark
their ballots seriously" because
this means a lot to the bartend
ers." Music Precedes Judging
A fanfare of music preceded
judging. About 50 frustrated
bartenders who had submitted

I recipes sat nervously in the aud-
lence.
The winner was Tom Stenger,
head bartender at the Ambas
sador Hotel. He created a drink
entitled, "Cocount Grove," after
that hotel's famed nightclub.
"I've been fooling around
with this recipe for years and
finally p e r f e cted it," Stenger
beamed happily. "I get to go to
New York for the finals in the
contest. This drink will be served
in all the bars at my hotel with
notations on the menu that it
won this prize."
For the benefit of those who
wish to un-frustrate bartender
Stenger, the recipe for his work
of art was smuggled out of the
judging room:
oz. bourbon
, 1-2 oz. curacao
1 oz. lemon juice
1-2 oz. orange Juice
( 1-2 oz. grenadine
Mix in a shaker with cracked
ice and pour into tall glas. Dec
orate with fruit and mint sprig.
Float 1 2 oz. Jamaica rum on top.
Attach toy monkey to edge of
glass.

By UNITED PRESS
New York Evangelist Billy Graham, on the ways the
devil has attacked his crusade:
"Today, for instance, as I was dictating my sermon notes, the
dictaphone caught fire and we had to get the hotel engineers to
fix it. Then I lost two pages of the notes. Something like Uiis
always happens when I preach on the devil."
San Francisco Dr. Jack

school pupils:
"Communist teachers were

Washington Adm. Arthur W. Radford, chairman of the joint
chiefs of staff, telling Congress that U.S. military power has
forced Russia to talk peace:
"It is only because of the present strength of the free world
that they seem to put less emphasis on violence at this particular
time, while they continue to strive for an overwhelming military
advantage."
Tokyo Army Specialist Third Class William S. Girard. when
his brother told him by trans-Pacific telephone call from Illinois
that a federal judge had blocked the government from turning
him over to the Japanese for trial:
"I sure feel good about it. I want to thank all the people who
have been helping me all the people who have done so much
for me."
Ottawa, 111. Louis Girard, on learning of the federal court
ruling which barred the trial of his soldier brother, William, by a
Japanese court:
"This proves to me that justice in the United Slates is greater
than anywhere in the world. Speaking for my family, all I can
say is that we're so grateful we hardly know how to put it."
