and post cards this year. (Postal
cards are pre-stamped and dis
tributed by the post office: post
cards usually feature a picture
or drawing and are privately
sold.)

first postal card 84 years ago
this month In 1873. However
dozen years before John P.
Charlton of Philadelphia copy
righted the Idea and permitted
H. L. Llpman to sell "Lipmanj
Postal Cards." Uncle Sam horn
ed in on the market, and Lip
man went out of business.
Actually, Austria, Germany,
England, Switzerland, Belgium,
and the Netherlands issued pre
stamped postal cards before the
United States.
The McKinlay Card
Postal cards one cent until
1952 when the price was dou
bled. Apparently, Summerfield
thinks they would still be an
"economical means of com
munication" at three cents be
cause he's urged a price increase
to help wipe out the postal
deficit.
During World War I there was
a one-cent tax on postal cards.
When the war ended the post
office was stuck with 200 mil
lion cardsprinted "2 cents." The
government stamped them over
as "1 cent."
One of the most valuable post
al cards was issued In 1902, feat
uring the likeness of President
William McKinley. Supposedly,
Mrs. McKinley didn't like the
picture of her husband, and most
of the l,fi25.000 cards printed
were destroyed. The few still in
existence are valued by collect
ors at S300 each.
International postal cards, at
two cents apiece, were first sold
In 1879. Double i n t ernational
reply cards, with already-stamped
return cards attached, were
issued in 1893 at four cents and
permitted immigrants to receive
messages from folks in the "old
country" too poor to afford post
age. Air mail postal cards, at four
cents, appeared In 1949, although
regular postal cards with three
cents extra postage were used
before that.

Crop Duster Dies

tin crop dusting flight Tuesday
afternoon ended the career of
Dean C. Johnson. 34.
Johnson was flying toward
McMifTnville airport from a crop
dusting job about four miles
southeast of here when his
pi ine crashed into a small grove
of oft trees and burst into
fiame.
Thre mm who were working
in an adjacent field pulled John
non from the small plane and he
was rushed to a McMinnville
hospitals where he was pro
nounced deaoT'on arrival.
Johnson was owner of Dean
Johnson Helicopters Inc., and
has dose crop dusting work
throughout western Oregon. He '
bad spent many years seeding
the Tillamook burn area.
Last winter he received con-1
siderable publicity when he flew i
a mission in central Oregon to j
breaK ice from power lines.
Johnson is survived by his
wife. Eileen, and two children,
and his father and mother, Mr.
and Mrs. W. O. Johnson of Mc
Hinnville. Johnson served as a Marine
dive bomber in the South Pa
cific during World War II.
Part of Alaska is as far west
as tropical Hawaii.

along a street when a big Aire
dale grabbed her handbag and
ran away. The bag was found
not far from the scene, but a
wallet and a change purse con
taining a total of S12 were miss
ing. They were later found in
the yard of the dog's owner,
with contents intact.
Lamb Resigns Post
At MacLaren School
Salem Of The State Board
of Control Tuesday accepted the
resignation of James Lamb, sup
erintendent of MacLaren school
for boys at Woodburn.
Lamb had held the position
since July of 1949.
The resignation is effective
Sept. 1.
Lamb said he had no plans
to announce at the present time.
The Board of Contrel said in
a statement: "Superintendent
Lamb's resignation has been
submitted to the Board of Con
trol and we reluctantly accept
it in the spirit in which it was
given. During his time at the
school he has greatly advanced
various programs of rehabilita
tion. His interpretations to the
public of the needs and objec
tives of the institution contrib
uted much to the citizens' un
derstanding of the school.
"We are appreciative of those
constructive phases of his ad
ministration." The board said it would wel
come applications and nomina
tions for the position.

health demonstration project on
insect and rodent-borne disease
Dr. Harold M. Erickson. state
health officer, said the program
will cost an estimated $20,000
! the first year of operation, and
is designed to study actual and
potential health problems result
ing from insects and rodents.
The project, first of its type
ever awarded to Oregon, is ex
pected to get underway about
November 1 under the direction
of Dr. Walter P. Browne, Uma
tilla county health officer.
