Avoiding a Dull Old Age
My correspondent, John Jones,
of California, writes me about
a friend whose experience inter
ests me much.
At the age of
23 this man
was going
from door to
door selling.
He said he
was soon im
pressed by the
number of un
happy old peo
ple he came to

know who seemed to be ter
ribly bored and unhappy, per
haps because in their youth they
had not had much of an educa
tion, and hence had never de
veloped many interests.
After talking to these people
a while he became alarmed for
his own future and said to him
self, "I certainly don't want to
be this way when I grow old.
That would be awful."
He figured he had better do
something about it soon; so he
took all his savings and went
back to college to finish his
course. Today, he is mighty glad
that he did this: he has so many
more interests in life than he
would have had without his
good education.
Dogs Declared To
Be Good Patients
Evanston, 111. W Dogs are
good patients and appreciate
what is done for them, according
to a veterinarian.
"Dogs have been known to
come back to a doctor for addi
tional treatment," Dr. J. V. La
Croix said in an interview.
"Every practicing veterinarian
has noted that dogs are suffici
ently intelligent to appreciate
treatment which eases their pain
and contributes to their com
fort." Dogs will even remember
where a vet lives, he said, and
sometimes travel great distances
on their own when they feel a
need for treatment. He said a fox
terrior he had once treated re
turned to him much later with
an arrow wound.
Anxiety, worrying about his
surroundings, or even firecrack
ers on the Fourth of July can
make a dog lose his appetite or
become physically sick. La Croix
said. But he thinks the new
trend toward animal "psychia
try" is "silly."
Basic psychological p'rinciples
are often employed in treatment
of animals, he said, but "this
business of trying to determine
the cause of the disturbance is
screwball."
"You can't put a dog on a
couch, ask him questions, and
take notes on his answers," he
said.
La Croix became a veterina
rian in 1906, when few practi
tioners treated dogs and cats,
and was one of the first to recog
nize the need for small animal
practice.
He was recently presented
with the Mark L. Morris Animal
Foundation Small Animal Award
for his work with dogs and cats.
But the doctor, who has been a
publisher of veterinary books
and a zoo consultant as well as a
practicing vet, believes there's
nothing like a dog.
"The cat is a selfish species
without much loyalty," he said.
"He generally attaches himself
to a home, rather than to an in

Which reminds me that in
yesterday's paper I read of a
woman of 81 who has gone back
to grammar school to finish the
education she was denied as a
child. Now she plans to go on
through high school and then
to learn to be a nurse! Which
shows that it is never too late to
get that education we want.
Always Been Observant
Of course, this does not mean
that a college education is neces
sary. I have known any number
of happy and very wise old peo
ple who didn't get beyond the
eighth grads But. as I talk to
them, I found they had always
been very observant; they had
developed many interests; they
had read good magazines and
good books; they had kept an
open mind, and they had wound
up with a mind well stocked
with facts and ideas. Actually,
a man who has observed well,
and thought well all his days is
likely to be much better educated
than is a college graduate who
quit reading and studying and
thinking the day he left school.
I see so many rtien and women
who feel greatly handicapped be
cause they did not have much
education, but I cannot sympath
ize with them much because
today it is so easy to get a good
education. As the famous Dr.
Osier used to say, all a man needs
do to become well educated is
to read each evening for an hour
before going to bed a few chapt
ers in some fine, instructive
book. The trouble with most of
us is that we read mainly trash.
We ought to do as Hplen Keller
did; because it was so hard for
her to read a book with her
fingers she spent her time and
energies on only the best books
of the world.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will - understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
diagnose by mail.

Arthur Miller's lawyer has
asked a federal court to throw
out his contempt of Congress
conviction on the basis of a Su
preme Court ruling Monday
which he said "fits the case like
a glove."
A memorandum filed with
U. S. District Judge Charles F.
McLaughlin urged a new trial
for Miller or outright acquittal.
Miller was convicted of con
tempt by McLaughlin May 3 for
refusing to tell congressional in
vestigators whom he had seen
at Communist meetings in the
past.
