last checkup only four months
ago. She has a hart murmur as
a result of a childhood attack of
rheumatic fever. But Hagerty

Reporters asked if Mrs. Eisen
hower had been staying in bed

did in April during a presidential
work-play visit in Augusta, Ga.

in an offshoot of the notorious
Mafia.
Scalise was a former associ
ate f one-time vice lord Charles
(Lucky) Luciano.

broad Senate investigation of
government economic policies
today with the statement that
world confidence in the Ameri
can dollar it the chief restraint
on Russian aggression.

cies for the Eisenhower admini
stration, was called as the first
witness in the injury being han
dled by Byrd's Senate Finance
Committee.
In his opening statement.
Byrd said the committee wanted
to know why taxes, interest rat
es, public and private debt, the
cost of living and the federal
budget are so high.
He said the investigation
would be the first full-dress
study of fiscal and money policy
since one conducted by a govern
ment commission in 1908.
"The immediate occasion for
this study is the existing credit
and interest situation and, more
important, inflation which has
started again with its ominous
threat to fiscal solvency, sound
money and individual welfare,''
he said.
