H:lis Blair Smith, formerly
of the SS Bar Ranch, now of
Callahan, suffered minor injuries
Sunday when his hnrse slipped
on a narrow trail, fell 75 feet
and rolled on him.
He was taken by helicopter to
Siskiyou County hospital and
was released late Monday after
receiving medical treatment.

Philip E. Gates, son of the late
George Gates, today is assuming
active management of the Gates

George Gates, who died last
week, had planned to retire in
the near future and plans for

tion. He is married and is the
father of two daughters.

Mr. and Mrs. Perry Johnson
and family left last week for
their new home in Vida, Ore., up
the McKenzie river from Eugene.

in a school near there.

and visited the home where Mau
pin lived as a boy.

Brownlee Dam

Idaho Power Company said to
day its Brownlee dam in tha
Hells Canyon stretch of the
Snake river is about half com
pleted and should be ready for
power production by late 1958.

Johnson said the most spectac
ular work at Brownlee is the
tunneling through solid rock for
instillation of penstocks. When
th dam is completed water will
pour through the penstocks in
four 28-foot diameter tunnels to
activate the power plant. Each
tunnel will be about 535 feet

Johnson added that heasy
equipment crews also were ex
cavating earth and rock from
the canyon wall to prepare the
powerhouse site. About 100 men
are working near Huntington.

Mill Kilns, Sheds
Destroyed by Fire
Springfield. Ore. W Fire of
undetermined origin destroyed
three dry kilns and three dry
ing sheds of the Fall Creek
Lumber Company containing
about two million board feet of
clear lumbe: early today.
The fire started about 1 a.m.
and firemen from the Eastern
Lane Protective Association and
. the Springfield fire department
fought the blaze throughout the
night to prevent it from spread
ing to the mill proper.
The fire was brought under
rontrol about four hours after it
started.
The mill was covered by in
surance and no estimate of the
total damage was made immediately.

day from Crescent City, where
they spent several days vacation.
On Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Bern
heisel left for Prineville to visit
friends. Bernheisel was a former
resident there.

ored Friday, June 7, with a
party celebrating her fourth
birthday.

to her grandfather, Mr. Charles
Wilcox of Ashland, and her aunt
