A Good Drug for Cancer
At a recent meeting of the
American Association of Path
oloai.sts and Bacteriologists in
Wash ington,
D. C. Drs.
Oscar B. Hunt
er and C. Bar
rie Coo k, of
Wash ington,
D. C, report
ed hopeful re
sults obtained
in 50 cases of
cancer treated
Or Alvarez with a drug
called ThioTEPA.
Hundreds of people write me.
saying, "One of my loved ones
has been found to have inoper
able cancer. He has had some
x-ray treatment, but the doctor
is not hopeful. Is tllere any
place to which I can take him
and is there any new drug that
is worth trying, or should, or
should I go to a quack?" Usually,
I say to these people. "I don't
see much sense in your travel

ledge about new drugs is dis
seminated so rapidly that doubt
less your good doctor at home
knows what has been discovered
in every bis center in the world.
Any drug that has been tested
thoroughly at places tike the
Memorial Hospital in New York,
or the Argonne Hospital in Chi
ef, go. or the Mayo Clinic in Ro
chester. Minnesota, is probably
aailablc to leading physicians
in every lar.e city."'
There are a number of drugs
that will clear up cancer in
small animals, but all of them
have been rather toxic for men
and women. Now. Drs. Hunter
and Cook say that, in their ex
perience, the best of the new
prugs is ThioTEPA. It has fewer
severe side reactions than have
the other drugs, and its restrains 1
the growth of more kinds of
tumor than are affected by other
drugs.
Inhibits Growth
The doctors are careful to say
that they don"t look on this
drug as a cure for cancer but
it definitely inhibits the growth
of cancer situated in the ovaries,
lungs, stomach, liver, mouth,
and pancreas, as well as the
black cancers, the lymphomas,
and Hodgkins' disease. It works
well, also, in certain types of
Battle Against
Foreign Aid Seen
Washington IP A key
member of the house threatened
Saturday a tough battle against
President Eisenhower's foreign
aid bill in the house this week.
The S3 .637.000,000 program
won bipartisan approval in the
senate Friday night. It was one
of the administration's rare vic
tories in the current battle of the
budget.
Rep. Otto E. Passman (D-La.),
chairman of the house appropri
ations subcommitte which acts
on money requests for aid pro
grams, predicted his group will
cut the bill and throw out its :
key feature the long-range
"development loan fund."
Passmans' subcommittee will
open hearings Tuesday with Sec
retary of State John Foster Dul
les in the witness chair. The
chairman said he would insist on
three or four weeks of hearings.

; were given the Amos E. Voorhels

Publishers association.
The award is for outstanding
! service in the interest and honor
! of Oregon journalism,
j Mrs. McKinney has been in the

Principal speaker at the ONPA

leukemia. In some cases, the pa
tient's pain disappears, and he
seems to get well, fie may stay
well for six months or more.
One good thing about the new
drug is that it can be taken into
the body in any way, and the
patient doesn't have to be hos
pitalized. This cuts down great
ly on the expense for old people
who haven't much money.
It would seem now that with
a drug like this which works
well on animals with cancer, and
works so well on people with
inoperable cancer, there is no
need for hopeless people to go
to quacks. We know their rem
edies have no value except as.
for a few weeks or months, they
give hope. To me. it is very
hopeful that a drug as good as
ThioTEPA has been found be
cause this means that many
chemists are now working, for
ward from this starting point,
with a good chance of getting
much better medicines.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
te impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
