forgot 16 lost years, but I
can't alford to waste more
time duelling on them, either.
And they ask me how the
world has changed. It's alder,
I say. And far more expen
sive. Remember, I must start
from scratch, building every
thing from a wardrobe to a
bank account and at today's
prices that's quite a building

job, even for a younger man.
But this is also more of a
world of opportunity than I
remember it. I've landed a
good job in Elgin, 111., and
already have been promoted.
How different that is from
the '30s!
Which brings me to the
most startling thing about
this age. When I left State
ville, more and more of its
newer inmates were what we
called "punks." Folks on the
outside usually label them
"juvenile delinquents."
The prison population of
the '30s had many men driven
into crime by a world that
had nothing to offer them but
a few days employment a
month and a dole. There is
never any excuse for crime,
but sometimes you can see a
reason why some men try it.
What's the reason for the
"punks" of today? Limitless
jobs at good salaries are open
to them; education is avail
able to most at half the effort
it took just to cat 20 years
ago. Yet many youths throw
away today's easy opportu
nities looking for something
even easier.
Anything that is lasting and
worthwhile, I've told them,
doesn't come easy, not even
the freedom they don't con
sider precious until it's lost.
On the other hand, I know it
is too easy to lose the human
dignity and faith that make
life rewarding in the end.
Well, maybe that's too
"preacher-like." I think, how
ever, I could dramatize the
lesson with a few prison
anecdotes. I used to want to
forget those prison memories.
Maybe it's well that I can't;
the stories and feelings some
day may help someone.
That's all in the future,
though, and about the future
I'm still a little vague. I'd like
to have my own business. I'd
also like to put to use, for
myself and others, what I've
learned about meeting life
and what it brings.
Right now, however, I'm
trying to regain my health
and my bearings. Freedom
itself is such a heady ex
perience, it takes time to ad
just to it. But I don't fear
tomorrow as I once did.
Tomorrow is better for
anyone who wants it to be.
