O avoirs
i ative swimmers of Acapuleo, Mexico,
thrill tourists daily with this hair-raising stunt:
they dive from atop a 250-foot cliff into a
narrow stretch of surf between jagged rocks.
The success of this daring dive depends on
more than mere nerve and luck. The narrow
inlet is so shallow that the diver must time his
leap perfectly to hit the water just as the crest
of a wave rolls in. A miss would mean death.
For their dangerous work, the swimmers
make as little as a dollar a dive. Yet they even
ply their trade at night, holding torches as
they plunge through the darkness.

1. A 250-foot drop faces this in
trepid diver at Acapulco, Mexico.
2. He must aim for a small chasm
surrounded by needlelile rocks.
3. He times his dive into shallow
surf to coincide with high waves.
4. Now the diver mus clamber out
before lido sweeps him oeoanward.
