Erik J My wife and I are in
our 60s and have five married
children. Our house is paid ofi, I
am still working and we have
some savings in the bank.
Two of our children are not
very well off and have gotten
into debt. Since we have room
in our house, I have asked them
to come to stay with us, rent
free. I also want to help them
pay off their debts so that they
can get on their feet again. My
wife is against it. She says we
have to have the money for our
old age.
The way I see it, my wife and
I will not have to worry about
our old age as long as the chil
dren are able to help us. Be
sides, it is our duty to help our
children when they are in
trouble. I think my wife is be
ing selfish.
Hilda J When children are
young and unahle to scratch
lor themselves, it is up to their
parents to do it. When they are
able to get out on their own. the
parents shouldn't do anything
for them.
That's the way I see it, and i
if that's selfish, all right I'm
selfish. But I fee! that there was
no reason lor our children to
get into such a mess. Once they
have done it, they must learn
how to untangle themselves.
In spite of all my husband !
wants to do for them, the chil
dren don't really appreciate it
He used to drink a lot when he
was younger and he neglected
them. Now he is trying to buy
back their love.
I don't want to depend on the ,
children in our old age. What
if they can't help us then? i

wrote about an old king who
gave away all his land and
property to his children and
then was cast off by them. King
Lear's action may have been
rooted in the same fear Erik is
now experiencing.
Feeling age aid helplessness
creeping up on him. King Lear
wanted to remind his children
that they owe their lives and
well-being to him. After this
last powerful, fatherly gesture,
he wanted to throw himself at
their mercy so that they would
prove their love for him.
Well, the story of King Lear
is melodrama, and Erik may fare
much better than the old king
did at the hands of his children,
but that doesn't make his actions
any more sensible.
Hilda is right. If these chil
dren are old enough to be mar
ried, they are old enough to
scratch for themselves. Erik
would make dependents, first
of them, and then of himself.
This is not unselfishness. It is
foolishness.
If Erik really wants to make
up for past neglect, as Hilda in
dicates, he will give his chil
dren understanding and advice
but no material aid. unless some
emergency beyond their con
trol, such as illness, occurs.

Of Valley Creamery
The Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce board of directors
plans to tour the Rogue River
Valley creamery in Central
rnjnt at its next meeting, June
27.
The board met yesterday and
instructed Ron Gandee, head of
the chamber's commercial divi
sion, to arrange transportation.
The group will leave Medford at
12 noon, make a guided tour of
the creamery, and hold a box
lunch meeting afterward.
The board also voted to send
chamber manager Don McNeill
to the Rocky Mountain Institute
for chamber of commerce man
agers July 7 through 13. Mc
Neill will travel to Montana
State University, Missoula, Mont.
for the week's program. i
A tentative date for the
chamber's annual membership :
drive was set for Aug. 1. Details
of the drive and a final date will 1
