Toledo, O. "? Ben Hogan,
ort of the favorites, withdrew
from the U.S. Open golf cham

Hogan, who had hoped to win i
the open' for an unprecedented j

fore his scheduled tee-off and

But the pain was so severe that

Hogan, who has adopted a
baseball-type putting grip to
overcome his recent troubles on
(3he greens, will be shooting for
his fifth U.S. Open title, and
the odds-makers apparently feel
he'll get it because they have
installed him as the favorite.
Seven other one-time Open
champions are in the field be
sides Hogan. They are defending
titlist Cary Middlecoff, Julius
Bjjoj, Lloyd Mangrum, Lew
Worsham, Jack Fleck, Ed Furgol
and' Gene Sarazcn.
All of them will know they
have been in a battle before they
are through with narrow-fair-wayed
Inverness, a course that
winds 6,919 yardi and has a par
of 34-36 70. Estimates of the
winning score ranged as high
as 290, a total of 10 strokes over
par for the four rounds.
Watch "Old Guys"
The gallery experts all
warned "look out for the old

Hogan, Sammy Snead and
Jimmy Demaret, who has taken
on a new lease on life recently.

still on the slow side but some
fish are being taken. Some

Decision Taken
By Virgil Akins
Norfolk, V'a. OPi Welter
weight Virgil Akins of St. Louis,
encouraged by his unanimous
decision over Walter Byars,
asked today for a shot at the
top contender.
"I deserve a fight with Tony
DeMarco," said lanky Virgil.
"DeMarco could get only a split
decision over Byars last month."
Akins' harder punching fat
long range beat stubby Byars
of Boston before 3,000 in their
TV 10-rounder at the City Arena
Wednesday nght.
Many of the fans thought 29-
year-old Akins didn t deserve
the decision. They booed the
verdict after rooting throughout
for little 24-year-old Walter, the
12-5 underdog. But the three
ring officials favored Akins on
the 10-point-must scoring: 98-
93, 99-96 and 96-94. The United
Press agreed, 96-94.

This will be good for the week
end.
Four-Mile lake is doing all
right by the anglers with still

the best bet.
GOLD BEACH POOR
Gold Beach - Johnny Wolf
says that the fishing is poor and
not worth mentioning for two
three weeks at least. Watch this
spot for the last of July and the
forepart of August.
Trout fishing in the Brookings
area is poor but the perch fish
ing in the mouth of the Chetco is
excellent. Bottom fishing has
been good. The salmon fishing
which was good a week ago has
tapered off with the big schools
of fish moving back to sea. Last
week they were" within two to
three miles of the beach and the
sports fishermen and commer
cials were in high cotton but now
the fish have moved too far sea
ward for sports fishing.
SQUAW LAKE REPORT
Squaw lake in the Apple
gate watershed has produced
some fine catches with still
fishing the best bet. Some
trolling deep with flashers and
worms have reported good suc
cess. BEND FISHING BETTER
Stream fishing in the Bend
section of the state is on the
upswing now. This is the best
time of the year for this area
as there are excellent hatches of
flies and this of course brings
these big browns out from under
the banks. Limit catches have
been reported from both the
Little Deschutes and Crescent
creek. Lake fishing is good now
in all the higher lakes.
BOW TOURNEY
The Siskiyou Bow hunters
have announced an official
OBH state field tournament to
be held at the range of the
Rogue Rod and Gun club at
Grants Pass, July 13 and 14.
There will be prizes for all
events including those for the
peewee archers. Eats and
drinks wil be served at the
grounds and space for camp
ing will be provided. This
event wil attract archers from
all over the state as well as
visitors from California and
Washington.
This should be quite an
event for spectators for we
have some of the best archers
in the state right here in the
valley. Remember the dates,
July 13 and 14.

Maass Catches
Huge Sturgeon
From Klamath
A iturgeon, 6 feet 3 inches
long, was on display today in
the show window at Sam's
Sporting Goods store here.
The huge fish was caught in
the Klamath river near Or

ing by John Maass, 304 South
Ivy. Up lo 4 p.m. today the
sturgeon was the subject of a
weight guessing contest.
Sturgeon are tough fish to
land and Maass can testify. He
hooked 15 fish before he made
his prize catch. His wife and
son, Johnny, hooked sturgeon
but did not land them.
Trout fishing on the Upper
Rogue is picking up and the
luck of three local anglers ap
pears to point that up. Cliff

Sandy Clave all reportedly got
limits last Sunday. They were

Stuart Threatens
To Quit Baseball
For Movie Work
Atlanta, Ga. HP Disgusted
Dick Stuart threatened to quit
baseball today for a career in
the movies.
The controversial outfielder,
whose home run hitting is more
than balanced by poor fielding,
said the Pittsburgh Pirates have
ordered him back to the Lincoln
(Neb.) club, where he hit 66
homers in 1956.
But Stuart said he wouldn't
play there unless the Class A
Western league club gave him a
bonus. Otherwise, he said he'll
work in the movies the rest of
the year.
Stuart, turned back to Pitts
burgh by Atlanta after hitting
eight homers in 23 games, said
he probably would stop at Lin
coln en route to his home in
Culver City, Calif., a movie
making center.
He came from Hollywood of
the Pacific Coast league, but
was batting only .211 for the
Southern Association team.
