Central Point for many years
before moving to Canada.

Stanley Chappel celebrated
his fifth birthday June 4 with
a party to which several friends
his age were invited. Another
party, on June 6, was held in
honor of the first birthday of
Miss Lilda Sue Crandall.

Griffin Creak Grange
Griffin Creek Grange will
meet in regular session Thurs

mics club will be in charge of the

Upper Applegate Grange
More than 30 members of the
Upper Applegate Grange were
present last Friday evening to
participate in the first meeting
held in their new grange hall.
They were serenaded throughout
the evening by a lively orches
tra of crickets situated in vari
ous parts of the meeting room,
which, according to Oriental
lore, partends good fortune.

which commenced with the pre
sentation of an attractive new
rug, the gift of Omar, Irene, and
Verna Culy, and a beautiful flow
er basket for use before the al
tar, given by Mrs. G. Q. D'Albini
of Medford.
A resolution was Introduced
empowering the executive com
mittee to sell the Grange prop
erty adjacent to the McKee
bridge forest camp and picnic
grounds, for the best price ob
tainable, since it is no longer
needed for grange use. The reso
lution will be submitted to a
vote of the membership at the
next regular meeting, June 28.
The worthy master announced
that donations are being receiv
ed to defray the cost of 75 used
chairs recently purchased in
Portland, half of which arrived
in time for Friday's meeting.
Price of the chairs totals S214
plus freight charges. Of this sum
more than S50 in contributions
had already been received the
worthy master stated.
Chaplain Kathleen Scovell re
ported that, for the first time in
many weeks, no illness or dis
tress on the part of any grange
member had been brought to the
attention of the relief commit
tee. The agriculture committee re
port included announcement of
the June meeting of the Apple-
gate Valley Garden club to be
held at Ruch school Wednesday.

test. Legislative committee chair
man Anna Scot reported on the
fate of various measures of in
terest to agriculture in the re
cently concluded session of the
Oregon state legislature.
Sister Maude Bachmann was
elected and installed in office as
lady assistant stewart succeeding
sister Anna Scott, whose resig
nation was accepted several
months ago. Sister Viola Finley
had been serving in this capacity
under interim appointment.
The request of Robert Cantrall
for withdrawal, in view of the
fact he must still complete three
years of military service, was
granted.
The secretary was authorized
to send a formal expression of
thanks to the Ruch school board
for the use of school facilities
during the lengthy interval when
the grange was homeless, and of
fering the grange hall for school
use whenever this may prove de
sirable. Refreshments of ice cream,
cake and coffee were served on
the new set of plastic dishes by
Sister Anna Scott and Brother
Cail Buffington, and the evening
was concluded with barber Siiop
harmonies and informal com
munity singing around the piano.
At the next meeting on June
28, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Williams
and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wil
liams will comprise the host
committee.

when his men cut through the
wall of a blazing night club with
axes they broke through within
a feet of two men playing domin
oes. The men never even looked
up, Neff said.

Building Destroyed

Pacific Telephone and Telegraph
I company here. The fire did an
! estimated 590,000 worth of dam
age.
The fire destroyed a sno-cat
and two personnel carrier trucks
owned by the Pacific Telephone
and Telegraph company.
The fire started about 3:15
p.m. and firemen had it under
control about an hour later. All
the equipment and firemen in
Roseburg were called oufc, to
fight the blaze.
The fire also destroyed two
quonset huts owned by the Car
sten furniture company and
threatened a glass company that
was next door.
Cause of the fire was not determined.
