Jimmy Dorsey Dies
Following Surgery

today at Doctors Hospital five
months after he underwent sur
gery for removal of a growth
from his lung.
Dorsey's brother and Iong

Jimmy Dorsey entered the
hospital in January for surgery
?nd was able to return briefly
to his conducting chore at a
midtown hotel in February. He
returned to tlie hospital March
1 and had been confined ever
since.

Dorsey. famed as a clarinet
ist, began his career on another
instrument, the cornet, in his
fr.ther's brass band when he was
in his teens. Jimmy and Tommy
organized their first combina
tion in 1920 and had an off-again
on-again partnership as band
leaders until Tommy's death.
The "Fabulous Dorscys" were
the sons of Thomas Francis and
Theresa Dorsey. Jimmy, chris
tened James Francis Dorsey,
was born in 1904 in Shenandoah.
Pa., where his father was a
music teacher. Tommy was
born in 1905.
Surviving besides the widow,
the former Jane Porter, whom
he married in 1927, is a daugh
ter, Julie Lou.
