Pain after Shingles
Many elderly people ask what
can be done for the miserable
and often devastating pain that.
in the cases of
older patients,
lasts sometimes
for many
months after an
attack of sliin
g 1 e s. In the
London Lancet,
Dr. W. R. Rus
sell and associ
ates say that a
Aivarer doctor can
sometimes help by repeatedly in
jecting procaine under the scar
red area with the idea of block
ing the nerves.
It is said that it helps, also, to
use a vibrator gently on the area
for from five to 10 minutes ev
ery so often. Some patients have
told me that it helps to freeze
the skin with an ethyl chloride
spray.
Cutting the nerves apparently
hasn't worked because, for some
time, I have seen no articles on
this operation. In acute cases,
injection of Protamide can help.
Aneurysm or Blow-Out in
An Artery
Every year some people get
into serious trouble because of a
blow-out in one of the large ar
teries of the body What happens
usually is that there has been
ulceration in a segment of the
artery; this weakens the wall
and then a bulge comes, much
like the bulge in a weakened I
tire. The danger, of course, is
that some day the blow-out will
be complete. Sometimes the per
son suffers much pain because
the pulsating and growing tumor
puts pressure on bones and nerv
es and other organs surrounding
the artery.
Years ago, there was little that
could be done for these aneu
rysms, but now expert surgeons
are going in and removing the
blow-out and substituting per-,
haps a piece of specially-prepar
ed artery from some animal, or
a bit of artery made out of nylon 1
or some other material. During
the last few years a whole new
branch of artery surgery has
come into existence. 1
In the old days many a man
had to have a leg amputated be-!
cause of an impending blow-out !
in the big artery back of the
knee. Today, many of these legs
are being saved.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
