Charge to be
Investigated
New York IP The Ameri

voted Saturday to investigate
"rumors" that amateur and pro

ances. The college, at a special ses
sion during its two-day fourth
annual meeting, decided to set
up a committee to investigate the
problem.
The action was taken as a re
sult of charges made at the
American Medical association
meeting here this week that ath
letes, both professional and am
ateur and including school chil
dren, have used "pep pills" to
win sports events.
It was hinted at an AMA meet
ing that the four-minute mile
was achieved by runners pep

known also Benzedrine or "ben
ny." The AMA ordered an investi
gation of the charges, but the
College of Sports Medicine said
its members thought they were
best qualified to make such an
inqury.

Commercial
Fish Nets
Are Banned
Sacramento 'IP Gov. Good
win J. Knight Saturday signed
into law a bill banning commer
cial fishing nets upstream from
the Carquinez Bridge on the
Sacramento River after Sept. 27.
Passage of the measure by
Sen. Louis P. Sutton (R-Max-well)
was hailed by sportsmen's
groups as a major victory.
"This bill was passed by an
overwhelming vote of the legis
lature responding to the request
of many thousands of sportsmen
s well as commercial fishermen
.hat commercial nets be banned
from Suisun Bay," the governor
said.
"It is hoped this will result in
a greater production cycle
which will make more fish avail
able to commercial fishermen
in the ocean. At the same time
we are assured that there will
be greater sports catch in the
Delta and in the Sacramento and
San Joaquin Rivers."
As amended by the assembly,
the Sutton Bill will permit com
mercial fishermen, most of
whom live in Contra Costa
county, to use gill nets for the
duration of the current season.
But they must be off the river
and bays for keeps after Sent
27.
