Man Addresses
Institute Today
Ashland Epidemiology of
accident control was discussed
by Eugene Lehr, Washington, D.
C, at this morning's session of
the institute on the principles of
epidemiology.
Lehr is chief of program serv
ices, accident prevention pro
gram, department of health, ed
ucation and welfare.
Others to Speak
Also scheduled to speak to
day are Dr. Edward T. Bloom-
quist, chief of the U.S. public
health service tuberculosis pro
gram, Washington, D.C, and Dr
George Adams, chief of the U.S
communicable disease center
civil defense training program,
Atlanta, Ga.
The four-day conference ends
today, after study by over 70
persons working with health
problems in Oregon and Cali
fornia.
Leading Death Cause
Lehr pointed out that acci
dents are the leading cause of
death for age groups one
through 34. He explained that
while communicable disease epi
demics can be explained by a
relatively uncomplicated act of
daily life, such as eating or
drinking, the auto accident "epi
demic" involves "almost innum
erable environment" and human
factors.
He advocated using "time test
ed public health techniques in
the field of accident control.
The local institute at South
ern Oregon college is one of four
being held in Oregon during
June.
