Dies in Logging
Truck Thursday
Marvin Gerald Sharp, 41,
Eagle Point, died of an apparent
heart attack Thursday while
driving a logging truck near
Sweet Home.
D. W. Glenn Houston, Linn
county coroner, said Sharp was
found dead about 1:30 p.m.
alongside the road in the cab of
his logging truck a half mile
east of the Cascade ranger sta
tion on Highway 20. The coro
ner said the man apparently suf
fered a slight heart attack while
driving on the road and pulled
off onto the shoulder.
Sacond Attack
Sharp was believed to have
suffered a more severe attack
later and died. He was driving
a logging truck for Ed Barton
for the first time and was on his
first run of the day.
Houston said an autopsy would
be held to determine the exact
cause of death.
Born in South Dakota
Sharp was born June 9. 1915.
in South Dakota, and married
LaVelle Wilkinson in 1936. Sur
vivors in addition to the widow
are one daughter, Mrs. Wilma
Peters. Central Point; three sons.
Dolbert, Gorton and Gerald, all
at home; parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Del Sharp. Prineville; three sis
ters, Mrs. Edna Berglund, Prine
ville; Mrs. Connie Campbell and
Mrs. Dorothy Wilson, both of
Virginia; and six brothers. Ottis
of Virginia, Clayton, Grand Rap
ids. Minn., Mel of Bonneville,
Garret, Crescent City, Calif..
Lester, Ellensburg, Wash., and
Gilbert, Prineville. He was pre
ceded in death three years ago
by a sisjer, Mrs. Edith Bennett of
Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held
at 2:30 pm. Monday. June 10,
at Niswonger and Winslow Fu
neral home in Bend.

eight gallons of gasoline from
a truck while in the parking lot

Held in Jail Earl Melton Jr.
30. La Mesa. Calif., is being held
in the county jail here for Cali
fornia authorities in connection
wth the theft of a 1957 sports
car from La Mesa, according to
state police. Officers said they
arrested Melton Thursday on
Highway 99 at the south end of
Phoenix.

Man Hospitalized
With Severe Burns
Cecil Howell. 1474 Grand
ave., suffered severe burns on
the upper portion of his body
while lighting a barbecue fire
about 6 p.m. yesterday, accord
ing to reports from firemen and
Sacred Heart hospital.
The hospital this morning de
scribed Howell's condition as
"fair." Firemen said that How
ell apparently was using gaso
line to start the fire. Fy-emen
dispatched a pumper, truck to
the Grand ave. address. The
alarm was turned in as a garage
fire.
City fire equipment was sent
out yesterday to extinguish two
grass fires which began from
trash blazes. One occurred about
1:10 p.m. and also involved
brush on a hill between Hillcrest
rd. and Cherry lane. The fire
covered from 20 to 30 acres. A
pumper and a pickup truck
from the Medford department
and a state forestry department
pumper answered the alarm.
The other fire burned off an
area of about 50 by 50 feet at
the Clifton Friend home, 252
DeBarr ave.
Medford Man Hurt
In Logging Mishap
Irwin R. Wooster, 1641 Bar
nett road, Medford, was taken
to Sacred Heart hospital at 10
a.m. today following a logging
accident, according to hospital
officials.
Wooster. who is employed by
the LeRoy Edwards Logging
company, was reported to be
suffering from a fractured leg
and bruises.
No further information was
available at press time.
Former Mayor Speaks
To Council Thursday
E. C. Gaddis. mayor of Med
ford from 1923 to 1924, last
night spoke to the city council
about several things, among
them that Berrydale had a sani
tation problem even when he
was mayor. He told the council
they were "doing a good job."
Discussing the knowledge his
period in office brought him
about city government, the for
mer mayor said the council
always should remember, if
nothing else, "to collect the
money and later pay the bills."

Dies in San Diego
Word has been received here
of the recent death of Mrs. Fred
(Mary Frances) McMullin Jr., 30,
former southern Oregon resi
dent, May 10 in San Diego.
Calif.
The McMulIins were residents
of Grants Pass and McCullin
was a Boy Scout field executive
for Grants Pass and Ashland un
der Clifford Hanson. Hanson was
then Boy Scout executive for
the Crater Lake area council.
Several Activities
While in Grants Pass the Mc
MulIins were active in the First
Christian church and Mn. Mc
Mullin was a member of the
Rotary Anns. They moved to San
Diego in the fall of 1955. when
McMullin accepted a position as
field executive with the San
Diego Boy Scout council.
Mrs. McMullin was born in
Portland on April 27. 1927, and
attended Oregon State college
and Reed college and received
her degree in English literature
from the University of Oregon
in 1950. She was married in
1948. She reportedly died of
meningitis.
Survivors Listed
Survivors in addition to her
husband include two sons, Scott
and Kirk; her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. H. L. McHenry, Portland;
sister, Florence Anne McHenry,
Santa Barbara, Calif ; and her
grandmother, Mrs. Mary Mc
Henry. Delhi, Minn.
Memorial services were held
in the Vist LeMesa Christian
church of San Diego and the
Moreland Presbyterian church
of Portland. Burial was in Rose-
burg Memorial Gardens, Rose-Jj
burg, on May 16.

Ashland Thomas G. Russell,
66, of 66 Alida St.. Ashland, dyed
at his home early Wednesday.
He was born Dec. 22, 1890.
in Speers Ferry, Va., and moved
to Ashland from Bend last year.
During World War I he served
as a corporal in Battalion C.
37th Field Artillery, with the
U. S. Army.
He is survived by thnee chil
dren, Mrs. Virginia Ferguson,
Ashland, Thomas V. Russell,
Bend, and J. Veril Russell. Prine
ville; his father. Patton Russell,
Speers Ferry, Va.: three broth
ers, four sisters and seven grand
children. Funeral services will be held
at the Winslow Chapel in Bend
Saturday, 'June 8, at 10:30 a.m.
with the Litwiller Funeral home
in Ashland in charge. Interment
will be in Greenwood cemetery
in Bend.

The body of Frederick J. Schu
macher, 91, Central Point, who
died Wednesday at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. Katherine
Wehmann, is being sent today
to Brooklyn, N.Y., for services
and interment.
Mr. Schumacher wai born
March 11, 1866 in Germany and
has been a resident of this com
munity for the past 15 years, ex
cept for occasional visits to the
east. He was a retired cafe
owner.
Survivors include one. son,
Louis Schumacher, Vancouver,
Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Hugo
Wehmann, Central Point, and
Mrs. Leonard S. Alley, Upper
Lake, Calif.; one sister, Mrs.
Fred Aldag, New Jersey; three
grandchildren and six great
grandchildren. Perl Funeral home is in charge
of local arrangements.

City firemen inspected 91
Medford dwellings yesterday
and made 50 recommendations
for correction of hazards. They
found no hazards in 54 resi
dences. Firemen stopped at 150
houses and found no one home
at 54. Occupants of five homes
turned down the inspection
offer.
