Angry Over
Movie Cash
Nerw York U Sugar Ray
Robinson declared angrily today,
,-I won't do any more business
with the IBC until thay pay me
for my pictures, even if Carmen
Basilio is signed to fight me."
The middleweight champion's
wrath about alleged non-payment
of movie money for a previous
bout has stymied negotiations for
his title defense against welter
weight champion Basilio at the
Polo Grounds, probably Sept. 17.
Basilio, the 147-pound ruler,
signed Thursday to challenge for
Robinson's 180-pound crown, and
he agreed to take 25 per cent of
all net receipt. which are ex
pected to exceed fl,000,000.
Stormy Session
But Robinson had a stormy
session with promoter Jim Nor
ris at sunset, and he left the In
ternational Boxing club in a
huff.
Sugar Rajr emphasized, "Nor
rls knows what percentage I'll
want when we get this picture
business straightened out. I told
him two weeks ago I wouldn't
lake less than 45 per cent no
matter what Basilio got."
Toursday night Norris indi
cated be was willing to give Rob
inson 40 per cent of all net re
ceipts from the net gate, thea
ter television and movies. He
expects the gross gate to exceed
l he $767,626 drawn by Robinson
year for the Giants. Bob Buhl, a
four-game winner, suffered his
second defeat.
Minnie Minoso's two-run sev
enth inning homer enabled the
White Sox to overcome a 2-1
deficit and present 35-year-old
Jim Wilson with his sixth vic
tory. Wilson limited the Red Sox
to seven hits and struck out five.
He hurled the fourth straight
complete game by a White Sox
pitcher. Dave Sisler was the
loser.
Mantle Hits 13th Homer
Bill Skowron knocked in five
runs with four hits and Mickey
Mantle clubbed his 13th homer
of the year to lead the Yankees'
season-high assault of 20 hits on
five Cleveland pitchers. Johnny
Kucks went the distance for the
Yankees to win his fifth decis
ion. Frank House homered in the
eighth inning to give the Tigers
their winning run after relief
pitcher Lou Sleater scored the
tieing run in the seventh. Billy
Hoeft also homered for Detroit
while Roy Sievers, American
league RBI leader, slugged his
11th round-tripper for the Sena
tors. The win was Sleater's sec
ond. Home runs by Billy Gardner
and Bob Nieman sparked Balti
more's nine-hit attack which en
abled Connie Johnson to gain
credit for his fourth win. Ned
Garver was tagged with his
fourth defeat. Bob Serv homered
for the Athletics.

Hardtop Races Saturday
Evening at Valley View;
Clay Layer Added To Track
When hardtop auto racing
fans turn out for this Saturday
night's battle of roaring ma
chines at the Valley View speed
way, they will see the results
of a week-long effort to improve
the track and thereby the driv
ing for the program of events
this season.
Track Manager Phil Bryant
has been on the job long hours
this week as a layer of clay has
been added almost all the way
around the oval. Some 500 yards
of the clay have been applied to
the speedway.
The fine-grained earth will
be an improvement in several
ways. It's free of rock and not
so dusty and with the right de
gree of moisture should provide
a faster track with its better
traction. Bryant has aimed at
giving more slope to the banks
and making the turns higher and
at the same time giving some
slope to the straight-of-way in
order that the pitch from turn
to straight-of-way will not be

so great.
Standard Session
The manager expected to be
busy well into Saturday getting
the oval in readiness for tomor
row nights contention. A good,
hard driving evening of racing
should result from the efforts of
the week since drivers are prone
to take more chances on the
speedway when the track is in
top shape.
A standard session of racing is
on tap for Saturday with time
trials at 7 p.m. and the first
race planned for 8 p.m. There
will be the A and B trophy runs,
four heat races a semi-main and
a main event. The variety and
spice in the evening on the track
will be what the drivers make it.
The track is on Valley View
rd., off Highway 99 in the vi
cinity of Jackson Hot springs.

JOHN DEERE
No. 8
FORAGE HARVESTER
Yes, the John Deere No. 8 Forage Harvester can
streamline your haying. You can harvest your hay
cured or green windrowed or standing with the
interchangeable windrow pickup and mower bar
attachments. You can change the length of cut (11
different lengths from 5. 16 to 3-9. 16 inches) to suit
your particular needs without buying and installing
attachments.
The No. 8 fakes all field and crop conditions in its
stride. Oscillating feed rolls and heavy-duty flywheel
cutter handle the heaviest of crops with ease. Spring
steel pickup teeth rake the field clean. There are
more facts you should know about the No. 8; stop in
soon for full information.

Double Win
Boosts Ems
In NW Loop
By UNITED PRESS
A double Eugene victory over
Tri-City, 16-13 and 8-6, Thurs
day night coupled with twin de
feats for Yakima pulled the
Emeralds to within four games
of the Northwest league-leading
Bears.
Eugene had the faultless Sa
lem Senators to thank for the
big boost as they blanked Yaki
ma 3-0 and 1-0 on their home
field.
In Lewiston, Jimmy Jones
pitched a shaky three-hitter to
give Wenatchee a 10-3 nightcap
victory after the Broncs had tak
en the opener 5-2.
Eugene and Tri-City picked
up the loose ends of Tuesday
night's 13-13 tie before their
full-length game. The Emeralds
salted It away in the 17th In
ning when Don Frailey drove in
the winning run with an Infield
single.
The second time out, Eugene
came up with the winning mar
gin on four runs in the 11th.
Engineering the attack were
Frailey with a two-run double
and Zeke King with a two-run
single.
Tri-City left fielder Bob
Hoehn set a new club record in
driving in four runs with three
homers.
Jones' First Win
Wenatchee right-hander Jones
notched his first win of the sea
son against four setbacks by
tossing no-hit ball after Lewis
ton's three-run first inning. In
the opener, Thornton Kipper ef
fectively spaced six hits while
Manager Hillis Layne drove in
three runs with a homer and
single for the Bronc victory. It
was Kipper's second win of the
year. Cal Bauer homered in the
seventh for the losers.
Salem climbed to third place
in the standings, one game
ahead of Wenatchee and six be
hind the Bears, chiefly on the
lethal arms of pitchers Vern
Kindsfather and Andy George.
Kindsfather fanned seven and
walked three in winning his"
seventh against three defeats
Vince Sarubbi, the first Bear to
bat, lobbed a soft single over
the infield for Yakima's only hit
in the nightcap. Sarubbi, a .230
hitter, also played the spoiler
last Sunday when he got the
only hit off George in the sec
ond half of a twin bill.

Vie Tonight
Chicago W A unique three
way fight takes place in Chicago
stadium tonight when ex-champ
Gene Fullmer tangles with mid
dleweight Ralph (Tiger) Jones
while both battle the image of
the current title holder Sugar
Ray Robinson.
Fullmer grabbed the middle
weight crown from Robinson
some time back, then relin
quished it last month when Rob
inson unleashed a single left
hook that sent Fullmer sprawl
ing. Fullmer admitted he "never
knew what hit" him.
Jones whipped Robinson in a
non-title fight back in January,
1955, but never got a champion
ship bid.
So now Fullmer, trying to
make his way back up to Robin
son, and Jones, who never quite
got there in the first place, take
on one another in a 10-round na
tionally - televised 160 -pound
match.
Spurns Fullmer Fight
"Robinson told us when we
were in New York that he didn't
care to have another fight with
Gene," Marv Jensen, Fullmer's
manager, said. "I guess it's just
as well Gene likes to fight, be
cause he's probably going to
have to do quite a bit of it before
he'll ever get another crack at
the title."
Jones, on the other hand,
thought his title bid was long
overdue.
"We should have had a crack
at Robinson right after we beat
him that first time," Jack Fri
day, Jones' trainer, said.
Jensen said the only reason he
agreed to have Fullmer fight so
soon after the Robinson match
was that he wanted "to keep
Gene in the spotlight. The only
way he can get the title back is

Drag Racers
Vie Sunday
At CW Strip
Hot rod racers and fans gath
er at the Camp White strip this
Sunday with the outlook bright
for as big a turnout for the
Southern Oregon Timing asso
ciation affair as two weeks ago
when the timing and drags drew
83 contestants and an estimated
3,000 onlookers.
Time trials start at 10 a.m.
and the first drags at 12:45 p.m.
The program plan is to have the
fastest vehicles in contention
during the latter portion of the
day's slate.
Non entries will be accepted
for timing after 12 o'clock noon
unless evidence to show that
the prospective parti cipant
could not have been present
earlier.
Better Strip Hoped
A wider, longer, smoother,
much safer drag strip within
just a few seasons is the hope of
the SOTA. Such facility, it is
felt, will attract faster compe
tition. Adequate seating for
spectators also is an aim of the
association. As a means occom-
plishing the foregoing hopes and
purposes, SOTA plans to charge
a nominal admission fee start
ing this Sunday, according to
Monte Wray, association president.
The drag races are expected
to produce rivalry among a
number of classes and sub-clas
sifications. Major classifications
are stock, gas, roadster, sports,
motorcycles and open gas.
A concession stand will be in
operation at the drag strip site
in west Camp White.
