Menopause
A woman writes to say that
she is having such a terrible
time with the menopause that
she is think
ing of doing
away with
herself.
She says
she never was
a worrier and
never thought
she had a
nerve i n h e r
body, but now
for 19 months
she has been a nervous wreck,
often jittery with associated
pains all over, bad flushes, acco
sionally a rapid heart-beat, ter
rible sweats, and many fears
and foolish worries. She jumps
up in the night and finds her
self in the middle of the room,
wondering how she got there.
She says her physicians
haven't been able to help her,
and I wonder why. Usually, the
flushes and a lot of the nervous
symptoms can be made much
milder by the taking each day of
a little pill containing an ovar
ian extract, obtained either from
the ovaries of animals or from
a chemical laboratory. Experts
tell me that these extracts work
more evenly if taken by mouth
and not injected. Not enough
should ever be taken to make
the woman's breasis sore or to
make her menstruate again. She
must not let . anyone frighten
her by saying the medicine can
produce cancer. Experts no long
er fear this.
If medicine doesn't do well
enough, and the person is badly

Living at a High Altitude
Many persons are afraid of
living at a high altitude of, let
us say. 5,000 feet. Actually, I
doubt if many persons are influ
enced by such an altitude. In
South America there are persons
who live at altitudes of 15.000
feet, and most of them get along
all right. The number of red cor
puscles in their blood increases
so as to compensate for the
small amount of oxygen in the
air. Occasionally, a person who
perhaps has a poor heart to be
gin with, or whose body cannot
compensate well, gets short of
breath, and has to go down to a
lower altitude.
A person can quickly tell if
the altitude is bothering him; if
it is, he is '.ikely to get short of
breath or a bit asthmatic and
wheezy. No one is likely to do
this who at sea level can walk
fast without discomfort.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.
