Baplisls Optimistic
After Convention;
Gains are Reported

with reports of a new church
finance program and an outline
of goals for tne immediate fu
ture. Bauer James Cauthen, Rich
mond. Va , keynoted the final
session with a plea for delegates
to "go forth and lay hands to 1
in gigantic task" of spreading 1
Christianity throughout the
world

He said that more than 8 500 -.000
persons are reported as 1
members of Southern Baptist
churches, an increase of 43.3 per
cent recorded m the past 10
years."
Southern Baptist churches are
now found in 42 states and num
ber more than 31.000. Contribu
tions last year totaled more than
million dollars a dav for a
grand total of 372 million dol
lars, he said.
He cited these figures as back
ground for the ambitious goals
the convention set for the Bap
tist Jubilee Advance, a celebra
tion of the first 150 years of org
anized Baptist work on a nation
al level in the Unit! States and
Canada.
The celebration is to be held
from 1959 through 1964. with
seven national Baptists bodies
participating. The convention
resolved to open 30.000 new
churches by the end of Jubilee.
PI May Abandon
Show for 2 Years
Portland The board of
directors of the Pacific Inter
national Livestock Exposition
here has dsiclosed it is consid
ering abandoning its annual
show at the PI pavillion for two
years.
Reason for the proposed mora
torium on the famed exposition
would be to allow renovation of
the pavillion for the Oregon
centennial to be held there in
1959. '
The board considered it would
be economically impractical to J
move the PI show to the state j
fairgrounds In Salem while the
renovation is in progress and
that a moratorium probably was
the best solution.
The recent state legislature :
appropriated $830,000 in state i
funds to rehabilitate the PI
building for trje centennial ex- ;
position and trade fair. The full
scale PI show would reopen In
the refurbished setting in J959 '
at conclusion of the state cen
tennial, according to still tena
tive plans.
Illjnois Valley High
Graduation Held
Cave Junction Fifty-three
Illinois Valley High school sen
iors received their diplomas in
graduation ceremonies held on
the high school field Wednesday
night.
"Changing Responsibilities in
a Changing World" was the title
of the address given by Dr. Har
old V. McAbee. assistant super
intendent of the Bethel district
school in Eugene. He was prin
cipal at the local high school
about five years ago.
Valedictory and salutatory ad
dresses were given by Ronine
Rauich and Ray Brewer, top
students of the 1957 class.
The processional and reces
sional were played by the Illi
nois Valley High school band,
and the school chorus sang, "1
believe."
Diplomas were presented by
Casey Piller. past president of ,
the Illinois Valley Lions club.
Pilgrims Determine
To Restore Marker

guard of 400 pilgrims determined
to restore a monument to the
victims of a Nazi massacre ar
rived here Saturday.
National interest in the chip
ped and battered monument was
awakened earlier this week by
a United Press dispatch telling
of a Czech immigrant who found
the site cluttered and unkempt.
Members of the Chicago chap
ter of the Czechoslovak Nation
al council reacted to this infor
mation by deriding to send 400
pilgrims to the site, dedicated
to the martyls of Lidice, Czech
eslavakia. A re-dedicalion ceremony wjj
to be held Sunday, after the
advance guard tidies up.
The Czechoslovakia town was
