Slate Police Report
Two Accidents
On Memorial Day
State police today reported
two Memorial day traffic acci
dents, one north of Central
Point on Highway 99 and the
other near Prospect on Highway
62.
Vehicles operated by Robert
Card Gail, 39, route l. box 382,
Gold Hill, and Jean Earl Horton,
fi2, Portland, collided at 4 p.m.
Thursday on Highway 99 near
Seven Oaks corner, north of
Central Point. According to po
lice, Gail was northbound in the
outside lane and Horton was
southbound in the inside lane.

Horton said another car
crowded him and he applied his
brakes, skidding into the path
of Gail's vehicle. There were no
injuries. Horton was cited by
officers for violation of the
basic rule.
A car operated by James Del
bert Setzer, 18, Prospect, went
out of control and struck a guard
rail about 100 yards south of
the Hogue River bridge on High
way fi2 near Prospect about 8:30
a.m. Thursday.
Police said the vehicle, which
was traveling west, apparently
went out of control because of
a low left rear tire.
Delmer Gene Maloy, 16, Pros
pect, a passenger in the car, was
taken to Rogue Valley hospital
for treatment of rib fractures.
Neither Setzer nor his other pas
senger, Sheila Dee Dolenshek,
Trail, was injured.
Khruschev Interview
Scheduled on TV
Television station KBES-TV
will carry an interview of Nikita
S. Khruschev, first secretary of
the central committee of the So
viet Union communist party Sun
day, June 2, from 11:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m.
The interview, conducted by
newspaper correspondents, will
be one In a series of "Face the
Nation" programs on Columbia
Broadcasting System television
and radio networks.
Questioning will be ' unre
hearsed and impromptu. CBS
said the interview will employ
the simultaneous translation
technique used in United Na
tions sessions, which will en
able statements to be translated
while they are being made.

The American Civil war has
produced more literature than
any other war in history and
continues to be an inexhaustible

Author Bruce Catton, whose
Civil war history, "This Hal
lowed Ground," is now on best
seller lists, feels that heightened
interest in the war and in
America's historical past has re
sulted ifrom recent literature's

the standpoint of ordinary peo
ple. The popularity of Catton's
latest book has brought about
renewed interest in his earlier
book on the subject, "Mr. Lin
coln's Army." Another popular
recent book on the period is
"Grey Fox; Robert E. Lee and
the Civil War," by Burke Davis.
Complete Biography
The most complete and au
thentic biography of the great
man and soldier remains, how
e v e r. Freeman's four-volume
"R. E. Lee." Among the many
recent biographies of Civil war
personalities most give special
attention to Lincoln and to his
family. James G. Randall has
just published "Mr. Lincoln," a
one-volume work based on his
four -volume biography. "Lin
coln the President." Ruth P.
Randall has rounded out the
family picture in "Mary Lin
coln" and in "Lincoln's Sons."
We have a vivid picture of Har
riet Beecher Stowe in Forrest
Wilson's "Crusader in Crino
line," and in Mrs. Nina Baker's
"Cyclone in Calico," the life of
Mary Beckerdyke. the first field
hospital nurse in American
history.

While MacKinlay Kantor's
"Andersonville" remains the
leading Civil War novel, sev
eral others of consequence are
available: "Feace at Bowling
Green." by Leland Crabb. a
story of the war in Kentucky,
"Roll, Shenandoah," Lancaster's
story of Union troops in the
Shenandoah Valley, and "The
Horse Soldiers," Harold Sin
clair's fictional account of Grier
son's vavalry raid. Van Wyck
Mason writes with a Southern
viewpoint in "Proud New Flags,"
the story of the South s efforts
to build a navy. "Our Valiant
Few." relating the Souths at

big, burly ex-boxer he got into
a fight with at a Hollywood
"strip" nitery.
The unidentified boxer and
Marx engaged in a brief, blood
less brawl Wednesday night at
the Mocambo, one of Holly
wood's favorite places for one
punch battles.
Bystanders said the fight start
ed after blonde model Joyce
Niven came to the comedian's
table and accused the beauty he
was with, socialite Lillian Sher
lock, of stealing her boyfriend.

Wind Causes Another Delay in Atomic Test

Portland Man Shot
In Clatskanie Scrape
St. Helens, Ore. (W Cecil
H. Black, 43, Portland, was re
ported in satisfactory condition
in a local hospital today after
he was shot three times "near

State Officer William Flippo
arrested William Morris, 36,
also of Portland, in connection
with the shooting.
Black was wounded in the
chest and thigh. He told state
police the shooting occurred
after an argument about driving.
