PAL Gym Closed
During Summer
Medford Police Athletic
League gymnasium closed last
night for the summer months.
Coach Jim Zack reported that
the gym will open about Sept. 1.
He said that PAL officials are
planning a busy schedule of box
ing shows for the fall season.
It is the hope of PAL officers
that more towns will start youth
centers, Zack stated. He added
that Medford PAL will do its
utmost to help the movement
grow. Groups interested may
contact Medford city police or
the PAL officers for detailed in
formation, Zack said.

Opening day concertration of
people, boats and trailers at Dia
mond lake can only be likened
to the early diys of the gold
rvsh. No doubt this aggregation
of anglers set a new high for
Oregon and with the exception
of Crowley lake in California,
for the entire Pacific Coast.
The season wasn't too many
hours eld before it was evident
that this fiasco wouldn't mea
sure up to the meat-in-the-pot af
fair that wat so widely public
ised and many of the more than
10,000 headed for other more
productive lakes.
The poor luck which was ex
perienced has been blamed on
everyone except the reel culprit
the poor fish end who could
blame them for heading for the
deepest spot in the lake when
up to 3,000 boats started chug
ging around dragging roughly
8, COO fenders, spoons and assort
ed flashers.
Success was better on Sunday
but by this time the big crowd
had departed in disappointment.

hours of 'fishing to catch each
fish. With this in mind it
could be highly possible that
these trout ind Diamond lake
will become increasingly wary
as they grow larger after all
ihey all had the same great
grandparents!
Generally it is believed tkat
after the excitement dies dowa
and the fish are t h r o u g k
spawning and whatever else
is keeping them occupied at
present, the fishing should
be pretty fair. As the summer
progresses it might be almect
as good as most people thought
it would be maybe.
Tour Mile lake After a slack
off, the lake is paying of in
limits again. F-5 silver Flatfish,
Knobby wobblers, either trolled
along or behind a flasher, and
single egg fishing are on the
menu now. This isn't the heave
it over and haul 'em in that it
was near the first of the season
but the fish are there and they
can be caught it is up to the
angler now.
Salmon fishing in the Hague
has picked up materially in
the Grants Pass area. Each day
this past week from two to five
fish have been taken near
Savage Rapids Dam and be
sides this number many more ,
have been lost. It is reported
that there was a large bunch
of wire etc in the Merrill sec
tion which was blocking their
progress. This has been re
moved and the fish are show
ing in many sections of the
river now.
Trout fishing on the Apple
gate and the Rogue is very
poor and is likely to remain so
for the remainder of the sea
son unless some late season
spot plants produces a little
flurry. Unless something drast
ic is done for these streams
in the near future they will
no doubt pass into that oblib
vion of neglected waters.
Fish lake Loyd Morris of the
Fish Lake Resort reports that
fishiiig at the present time is
excellent. Many excellent catches
of fish from 8-10 inches with a
number of larger fish up to 21
inches have been taken. The best
method is still fishing with eggs
and worms One party from
Grants Pass trolling Doc Shelton
with worms limited in less than
two hours. This should be one
of the really hot spots this week
end.
