roof jacks, etc. all of which
simplify installation and im
prove efficiency.
One of the more recent de
velopments in kitchen exhaust
fans is the range hood, a metal
canopy extending out over the
range. Some of these have a
self-contained fan or blower;
others provide fcr the installa
tion of a fan in a cabinet above
or in the wall. In many of these
units a duct extends up through
the cabinet and travels to the
Outside either through the ceil
in",, the avail or the soffit (that
nets).
Blend With Design
Some of the newer hood
models can be obtained in mod
ern style, colonial or provincial
and are available in a variety
of colors. It is possible to select
a hood that will blend with any
kitchen design or color. Sides
are generally rounded or tapered
off to permit full opening of the
doors of adjacent cabinets.
Some hoods include built-in
lights for illuminating the range
and, with factory -installed
switches for controlling the
light, the fan or both. t

et. The important thing is to
make certain that in your kitch
en you do include an exhaust
fan and one with the right ca
pacity for your kitchen.

Today's furniture is proud of
its good-looking legs and is riot
afraid to show them off to the
world.
Since the feeling which de
signers want to achieve in their
furniture is a light, airy look,
they are bringing the furniture
off of the floor by placing it on
trim, neat legs.
Sofas, for example, which
may have a tendency to look
bulky and heavy, are placed on
legs to give a lighter appearance.
Chests, too, in many cases, are
not built flush to the floor but
are raised on legs.
The legs are scaled so that
they are in proportion to the
piece which they are holding up.
They do not give a spindly ef
fect but are sturdy and attrac
tive. Whether they be wood or
metal, legs are an important
part of today's furniture.

as soon as they appear in a fa
vorite rug, you can give that
rug a longer life, according to
a new Cornell University Exten
sion Bulletin on care of rugs
and carpets. The bulletin re
minded homemakers that fray
ed, ends of a rug should be
bound.

"Where should I put the laun
dry?" This question frequently con
fronts the homemaker planning
to remodel her kitchen. And
what better time could there be
to bring the laundry equipment
out of its dark, damp basement
hiding?
Today's busy housewives and
mothers emphatically declare
they want the laundry on the
main floor of the house. The fa
vorite location seems to be the
kitchen. Provided the room is
large enough, it is best to sepa
rate the laundry area from the
main kitchen work area by a
peninsula or island unit. The
laundry can then successfully be
combined ' with other kitchen
activities.
Unless your equipment has
been purchased recently, you'll
want to include in your laundry
plans a new automatic washer
and dryer or a combination
washer-dryer, which takes less
space. The handsome styling of
these appliances makes them
particularly suitable for kitchen
installation. Available in white
or colors to match your steel
cabinets and other appliances,

completely integrated.

dryer, the really modern con-
cept of a laundry includes steel
kitchen cabinets to provide nec
essary storage space for laundry
supplies. Hamper cabinets are

Near East Influence
Seen in Furniture
The mystery and intrigue of
the Near East have had a great
influence on American furniture
styles and will continue to do
so. Designs from the Orient first
gained favor on the west coast
but have gradually travelled
across the rest of the country.
The increased use of grilles
and screens in furniture, which
cast intriguing patterns of light
and shadow, are evidence of this
trend, as are low chests, tables
and seating pieces.
The magnificently colored
tiles that have given Middle and
Near East architecture its glow
ing individuality have inspired
American designers to bring
more warmth and color into our
homes. One designer predicts
that the Turkish influence will
