Designed With Rest,
Comfort for Family
Dmner is a family affair. And
it should be eaten in pleasant,
relaxing surroundings. When the
family is gathered around the
dining table, for the evening
meal or on festive occasions,
they should be able to dine in
comfort.
The dining groups which are
available today have been de
signed with that idea in mind.
Whether you have a large dining
room or whether your home has
a smaller dining area, you will
find a group which will fit beau
tifully and which can be adapted
to your needs.
You can furnish your dining
rjm in any style or period
which suits your fancy. Some
very lovely French provincial
groupings were introduced dur
ing the recent home furnishings
markets.
Many of the French provincial
lines have a painted finish. A
number of them combine rich
natural wood table and chest
tops with painted legs. It is an
interesting and attractive com
bination. Cane Backs
One line has dining chairs
with cane backs which are paint
ed white. Running through the
canes is a delicate criss - cross
pattern which is painted in a
soft pastel color.
The many correlated collec
tions are a perfect answer for
the dining group which must be
placed in a living-dining area.
The furniture for both areas is
coordinated so that it blends well
together and presents a unified
setting.
One such line is called "Ca
dence." This is a contemporary
crourjins with colonial over
tones. Pieces are available for
i dining room, living room and
! bedroom.
There are many pieces from
which to choose for your dining
room. A. number of differently
styled chests are available. You
can' combine two or perhaps
three against one wall and place
a china deck on one of them.
A bookcase deck is also avail
able vhich contains a fall-front
deck.
The wood used in this group
is maple in a light, honey finish.

More Styling
More styling is being seen in
metal dining groups these days.
One new line includes an Early
American dining group. It is
available with either a rectan
gular or a round dining table,
Chairs have padded seats and
backs, covered in an attractive
fabric in a provincial pattern.
The romantic influence sweep
ing the country, inspired by the
musical play, "My Fair Lady,"
has reached the furniture field,
too. One new dining group is
even called by that name. It is
cleanly and finely styled and
eloquently tells the story of the
dignity of traditional design
Servers are continuing to be
an important part of dining
room groupings. They are. won
derfully handy for transporting
food from the kitchen to the din
ing room or for bringing refresh'
ments into the living room when
you are entertaining more cas
ually. They also add a bit more
storage space.
Walnut is the most popular
wood for the contemporary
dining groups. Maple and cherry
remain strong for early Ameri
can. Mahogany is still the favor
ite for 18th century groupings.
Efforts Made To
Reduce Noises
Noise attacks us from all sides
and often produces an unaccount
able feeling of irritability. A
great deal has been done to coun
teract noise in the home, partic
ularly in the kitchen where sev
eral appliances are going simul
taneously in addition to the de
manding voices of small chil
dren.
Knowing that a high noise
level in the kitchen increases f
tigue and jangles tne nerves,
manufacturers have made a con
certed effort to make the opera
tion of cabinets and appliances
as quiet as possible. Building ma
terials and floor coverings are
also available to serve as quiet
ing influences.
. Steel kitchen cabinet doors are
insulated with a sound deadening
material and are equipped with
rubber stops so that Lilliputian
members of the family can slam
them without driving mother to
distraction. Cabinet drawers roll
softly on nylon bearings.

Resilient flooring should be us
ed if you want to deaden sounds.
Rubber tiles and vinyl plastics
are particularly effective and al

covered each day in the kitchen.
Using rubber or plastic coated
wire racks for dish draining and
storage are small devices to help
sound condition the kitchen.
Carpet's acoustical benefits
play a vital role in radio and
television broadcasting. The
manager of the New York studio
building for CBS says: "It
would be impossible to do a
show without carpets, since they
are extremently important for
acoustic purposes eliminating
noises of show personnel walk
ing about the studios while pro
grams are on the air."
Oklahoma Man
In Choir Before
Becoming Popular
Jimmy Wakely, one of Ameri
ca s best-known western singers
who stars at the Medford Home
Show beginning Thursday, May
30, was raised in Oklahoma, but
learned his singing in a church
choir rather than on the range.
Jimmy's career as a western
singer began after he had estab
lished himself as a singer of
popular songs and had- been
signed to a Hollywood contract.
In addition to having had sev
eral records hit the million mark
in sales, Wakely has starred in
more than 30 movies, has ap
peared as a guest star on numer
ous television . productions, and
has had his own network radio
program for more than five
years. He is believed to be one
of the highest-paid western
singers in show business.
Variety Acts
In addition to Wakely, the
stage show at the Medford Home
Show will feature such variety
acts as The Great Montyne and
Sing Lee Sings.
Montyne recently appeared on
the Ed Sullivan show, where he
thrilled television audiences
with an act which has been chill
ing club audiences for several
years. An acrobat and stunt man,
Montyn's most hair-raising act
is a hand-balance on a stack of
shaky blocks over a table
studded with razor sharp knives.
The Sing Lee Sings are a
famous Chinese family of enter
tainers who do everything from
juggling to acrobatics to song
and dance acts. Small ones in the
family form a second troupe,
the Chinese Mouseketeers.
Mistress of ceremonies will be
Blanche Cooper of th Cooper Sis
ters, who last appeared at the
Frontier in Las Vegas.
Three complete shows daily
will be continuous entertain
ment from the time the doors
open each day until closing, pro
ducers said.
