Nothing could be farther from
the facts even though appear

that a star in the far-off distance

sees is one of the 20,000,000 or
so meteors which plunge every
day through our comparatively
thin atmosphere say from 40 to
80 miles from the surface of our

They are solid matter which
may once have formed part of
some planet or comet. Rushing
through the thin air at their
terrific speed, the friction caused
and burn. As a result, even when
a meteor does reach our earth,
it is only a fraction of the mass
which first entered our atmos
phere, the rest having been con
sumed. The greatest single met eor
shower on record and records
go back to 644 B.C. occurred
one the night of November 12-.
13, 1833, when the number was'
estimated at Boston to exceed
240,000. This shower was seen
from the Gulf of Mexico to Hal
ifax, Nova Scotia.
Largest Crater
The largest meteorite crater,
first sighted from a plane in
19 4 3, is in northern Ungava,
Canada, and is water filled. Its
rim is 7V2 miles and it is 1,350
feet deep.

Excitement on Tanopah
Tonopah, Nev. (in Light fall-
out from today's atomic detona
tion caused a flurry of excite
ment in this mining community
of about 1,500 persons, located
100 miles north of the Atomic
Energy Commission's Nevada
test site.
Although the fallout was the
heaviest received in Tonopah,
the AEC said the peak amount
was less than l-150th of that
considered dangerous by the
most rigid standards.

I don't get the right part."
Beginners' Band,
Orchestra Meet Set
Medford public school students
of grades four through 10 who
are interested in beginning a
band or orchestra instrument are
invited to a meeting at 9 a.m.
Saturday, June 1, in the senior
high band room.
The entire instrumental music
staff will be available for con
sultation, according to I. A. Mi
rick, supervisor of instrumental
music. At least one parent should
accompany each child, he said.
Summer orchestra classes run
for two weeks starting June 10
and again from July 15 to Aug
ust 2, making a total of five
weeks for all band students,
Mirick explained.
One concert is planned for the
intermediate grade school band
and the junior high band. Two
concerts are planned for the high
school group.
In addition, Mirick said there
will be an orchestra recital and
a beginners band recital at the
end of the sessions.
Elmer Ayers will teach orch
estra and John Drysdale the
band.

450 feet deep. Scientists have
estimated that it would take a
meteor of about 25,000 tons
traveling at 60 miles per second
to gouge out such a hole. And
some meteors have been timed
at traveling again as fast.
The largest meteorite in any
museum is at the Hayden Plane
tarium, N.Y., found in Green
land, and it weighs 32Vi tons,
which was discovered in 1902, a
short distance northwest of Ore
gon City, Ore. This meteorite,
known as the Willimette metero
rite named for the nearby valley
in which it was found and the
river, measures lOVi feet by 6V2
feet by 4 ',2 feet and originally
weighed perhaps 25 tons.
Since historic time, the largest
meteorite to hit the earth was
near Vanovara, central Siberia,
June 30, 1908. Before disintegra
tion, it is believed to have weigh
ed right around 200 tons.
Someone Will Be Killed
oooner or later, of course,
someone is going to be killed by
a meteor but up to the present
writing, there is no recorded
fatality although Mrs. Hewlett
Hodges of Sylacouga, Ala., has
the distinction of being injured
by a glancing blow from a meter
orite on Nov. 30, 1954.
As this despite the fact that
tremendous showers have bomb
arded our earth perhaps the
greatest occurring at Poltusk,
Poland, on January 30, 1868. On
that date, about 100,000 of these
stony meteorites fell, weighing
from l30th of an ounce up to
almost 20 pounds.
