    Change in Ordinance
Sought for Churches
Medford's city planners rec
ommended to the city council
last night that the zoning ordi
nance be changed to permit
building of churches in single
family, two family and multiple
family residential districts.
lhe ordinance change speci
fies that churches would be per
mitted in residential areas only
if certain regulations are ob
served in construction. Among
provisions are a 1 to 6 parking
ratio, or one unit of parking for
each six units of seating capa
city, and a 20-foot property line
setback on any side of the

building in which there is
door or window.
The existing ordinance per
mits churches to be built only
in multiple family zones.
Prior to acting, on the ordi
nance change, the commission
held a public hearing on a peti
tion from the Rev. L. D. Kruse,
pastor of Bethel Assembly of
God church, for a change of
zone on property between Mc
Andrews and Biddle rds., where
the congregation proposes to
build a new church.
No Opposition
No opposition was voiced to
changing the zone from single
family to multiple family. How
ever, the commission denied the
petition on the basis that the
ordinance change pertaining to
church construction would, if
approved, authorize construc
tion of the church there without
necessitating a zone change.
The commission also recom
mended to the council that ap
proximately 30 acres of city
owned property at the county
fairgrounds be annexed to the
city. The property is located
west of Bear creek. The recom
mendation was requested by the
city council. The reason voiced
last night for he council's de
sire to annex the property was
that carnivals and other groups
can now set up concessions on
the property without being re
quired to obtain city licenses.

Chinese To Repair
Taipeh Embassy
Washington (IP) National
ist Chinese Ambassador Holling.
ton K. Tong said today he would
lead his countrymen in a sub
scription drive to repair the riot
damaged U.S. Embassy at Tai
peh. Tong pledged to donate ?1,000
put of his own pocket.
The ambassador said Monday
night that the mobs participating
in anti-American rioting on For
mosa last week were not organiz
ed or Communist-inspired.
He said the riots were an "iso
lated ring" that got out of hand.
Asked specifically how the
rioters knew how to get to the
embassy code room, Tong said:
"The code room, you see, when
the mobs became mobs, they did
a lot of things which they re
gretted afterwards." '
U.S. officials at Taipeh said
Monday that "definitely organ
ized" rioters armed with' axes
concentrated on smashing their
way into the secret embassy code
room. They said the attack com
promised some of the U.S. codes.
Tong said the Nationalist Chi
nese "are going to dig out of our
own pockets and pay for dam.
age" to the embassy. If neces
sary, he said, "I believe we will"
build a new embassy at no cost
to the American taxpayers.

Case Goes To Jury
. Portland (IP) A jury of nine
women and three men was to
start trying to decide today
whether Glen Denessen, 35, is
guilty of beating his daughter
Janet, 13.
Denessen, a waterfront work
er, denied Monday from the wit
ness stand Monday that he ever
beat Janet with 'a dag chain or a
stick or hit her with his fist. He
is on " trial on an assault and
battery charge.
Denessen's wife, who faces a
similar charge, also took the
