Is there a statue of Pierre Oi
ler at any race coiirse? Is there
a "Pierre Oiler Handicap" any-
where? Has there ever been a
thoroughbred named Pierre Oi
ler? I think not This makes
Monsieur Oiler one of the
world's most forgotten men. His
is also a case of unforgiveable
ingratitude. Why? He invented
the pari-mutuel system "of wa
gering which has brought race
track operators unprecedented
prosperity. Oiler ran a drug
store on the Boulevard des It
alians, Paris. On the side he op-
erated a handbook. The Paris
horseplayers, the-world's sharp
est bettors, soon had Oiler reel
ing financially. He decided to
let them bet against each other.
So he originated the so called
pari-mutuel system. He handled!
the details of the wagering at
his shop and took in payment
five per cent of the gross amount
wagered. The French race tracks
soon took up the method. It has
since spread all over the world.
In this country over $2Vfc bil
lion annually is wagered at race
tracks by the pari-mutuel sys

Why was that section of Man
hattan called "The Red Light

window at night A red ribbon
in the daytime. Also when the
"Ladies of the Evening" went
out walking to solicit customers
they wore black shoes with red
heels as a means of identifica

The current practice in describ
ing a female with ideal propor
tionor those that are not ideal
is to quote her measurements
in three dimensions as follows
36-23-36. Referring, of course,
to the bust, waist and hip mea
surements in order named. A
feminine subscriber suggests that
- that measurements thus quoted
are inadequate description. That
the height should be included,
as what might be ideal measure
ments for a tall female are not
those for a petite type. She sug
gests four dimension descriptions
giving the height in inches. As
for example, the measurements
of a woman of five feet, six in
height would be described 36-26-

tirement, Robert has decided to
try for stardom himself. After
small roles in "The Bridges of
Toko-Ri," "The Proud and the
Profane" and 'The Tin Star,"
he's coming uito his own with
a fat role at Paramont studio in
"Teacher's Pet."
'But not me, I stopped acting
shortly after I was married,"
laughed Miss Dove, now Mrs.
Robert Kenaston, wife of a re
tired rancher. "I started work
very young, in my 'teens, and I
decided that when I married I
wanted to have a normal, or
non-professional, life. I gave up
acting because I wanted o.
Retirement Enjoyed
"In Palm Springs the days
aren't long enough to do every
thing I like. I play golf and
paint, do a normal amount of en
tertaining and run my home. I
also have a 19 year-old daughter,
Gail."
Billie Dove now looks like the
wealthy Palm Springs matron
she is beautiful p r e m aturely
white hair; a clear, tanned skin
and expensive dresses with
sweaters to match.
Her friends know she once
was a big star, she says. But
despite her one-time prominence,
"I never encouraged or discour
aged Robert to be an actor."
