elaborate stainless steel distil
lery were seized by Clackamas
county sheriff's officers late
Monday. The operation was de
scribed as one of the most elab
orate ever seized in Oregon.
Arrested in the raid were
John Everett Lee, 55, Ray Tan
sill, and Everett W. Kruckman,
57. The "still" was found about
26 miles east of Brightwood by
Farrell Blum, a Portland police
man working in the area in his
off-duty hours.
Officers said the "still" had
been in operation since April.
Finished whiskey was stored
and distributed In a tavern
which Sheriff Joe Shobe did not
identify.
Residents of the U.S., Italy
and Great Britain have about
the same per capita consumption
of tobacco, according to recent
trade estimates.

of a series of sermons on 'The
Ten Commandments" in Madison
Square Garden Monday night
and 529 persons responded to his
magnetic and impassioned plea
to "come forward and make a
decision for Christ." ,
From every corner of the huge
sports arena in the heart of Man
hattan they came forward from
the loges, the balconies and the
floor. The weeping, the joyful,
the very young and the very old
made their way down escalators
and crowded aisles to the front
of the' auditorium.

Graham stood grimly in the
pulpit, arms folded, hand on
chin, waiting pensively as the
"inquirers" filed down the long
aisles to take their-places in the

val. Nearly 225,000 have heard
the 38-year-old Baptist minister's
sermons so far.
The decision-makers were join
ed by members of Graham's staff
of 500 volunteer counselors, who
led them to a conference room in
the basement of the Garden to
"give them guidance in reading
the Bible and following a Christ
ian life."

cemetery into a dead letter of
fice. Postal inspectors investigating
complaints that residents failed
to receive expected letters found
quantities of mail in Hollywood
Cemetery.
Authorities said "Mueller con
fessed dumping the mail but
"only on days when it was too
heavy."

nine other wholesale plywood
companies were indicted Monday
by a federal Grand Jury charg
ing price fixing in "violation of
the Sherman anti-trust law.
The indictment said the firms
sold about 13 million dollars
worth of Douglas fir plywood for
building in Southeastern Michi
gan in 1954.

The Indictment charged that
fixed prices and quantity dis
count rates from 1949 to 1954
practically elminated price competition.
Free Drinks For
Legislators Toid
Raleigh, N. C. W) The Ra
leigh News and Observer said
today that it had uncovered a
service distributing free liquor
to legislators at a downtown
hotel.
The newspaper's first edition,
complete with pictures of the
liquor being delivered to the Sir
Walter Hotel, hit the streets just
as the Monday night legislative
session ended.
There were angry mutterings
from legislators as they gathered
in the Capitol corridors and ho
tel lobbies to read the story.
None would comment for pub
lication but one said "That's go
ing a little too far. Everybody is
entitled to a toddy now and
then."
Many of the legislators ex
pressed interest in the list of
names of the 33 persons the pa
per said had shared in the
liquor distribution. The News
and Observer said, however, it
was withholding the names pend
ing a check to determine whether
the legislators actually were liv
ing in the rooms registered in
their names.
Liquor is sold legally only in
state stores in North Carolina
and possession by an individual
of more than one gallon is prima
facie evidence of possession for
the purpose of sale.
President To Spend
Week End at White House

the first time in history a rhi
onceros held still long enough to
be milked.
The huge animals generally
are short-tempered, but the
Frankfurt zoo had an advantage.
A rhino named Catherine the
Great apparently was grateful
to the veterinarians who helped
her through a serious illness.
She became virtually tame and
had no objections to being
milked. The milk had a butter
fat content of .27 per cent com
pared with 3 or 4 per cent for
cow's milk.

The court martial of Marine
Private Peter H. Green, 18, on
charges of failing to draw his
rifle from a supply sergeant last
March 18 was scheduled to re
sume today.
Trial of the young Evansville,
Ind., serviceman was continued
last week after Defense Attorney
William Daubney moved for a
mistrial on grounds that a mem
ber of the court had discussed
the case in public.
Green reportedly refused an
order to draw his rifle because
he is a conscientious objector.

Crompton told the judge he

mile" but didn't make it because
