New York V There are
more restaurants in New York
where customers can help them
selves to smorgasbord from
groaning tables than there are
in Stockholm. The custom stop
ped during wartime food short
ages, was not revived, and now
the lutefisk. sillsalat and other
delicacies are served individu
ally. There is a labor shortage and
housing shortage in Sweden,
brought on by the rapid indust
rialization of the country since
the end of World War II. Work
ers are moving steadily from
the farms into the cities, in a
ountry whose entire population
is less than that of New York
City.
IWustry Privately Owned
Sweden has had a Social Dem
crtic government now for 25
years. The Social Democrats
point out that 90 per cent of
S.dish industry is privately
owned but some industrialists
feel there is little to choose be
tween government ownership
and the heavy taxes and gov
ernment controls under which
privf te industry operates.
Gothenburg is a cosmopolitan
vaport sometimes called "Little
London." The Royal Bachelors
club founded there by the Eng
lish in the 17th century still
flourishes . . . restaurants in
Sweden are not permitted to

It Small Car Market
Sweden entered the small-car
market in the United States last
year with the 4-passenger Volvo.
They sold 5,000, mostly on the
West Coast, and expect to sell
10,000 this year . . . Sweden
Meeds dollars and is very con
scious of the American market.
But some manufacturers are
cautious about sending their
goods here for fear they may
create a demand in a big market
which they are not yet equipped
to fill. This is true of some of
their new designs in furniture,
rugs and tapestries.

window-shopping in Stockholm.

Businessmen Urged
To Aid Community
Portland up The Portland
Chamber of Commerce was told
today that businessmen should
take a wide and more disinter
ested part in community affairs.
W. Homer Turner, executive
director of the United States
Steel Foundation. Inc., said bus
iness concerns do not operate
independently of the communi
ty but rather they affect the
community and are affected by
it.
"Any business concern doing
a sufficient volume to make it a
primary economic unit in the
neighborhood should .. . make
provision in its organization a
structure for proper attention to
community affairs and leader
ship," he said.
Turner said investments
should be made in community
activities with no thought of
reaping an immediate return
profit. Instead, he said, the pol
icy should be one of "putting in
for ultimate benefit to all."
A lively debate is going on in
Sweden over whether they
should make atomic bombs. A
group of American correspond
ents asked Prime Minister Tage
Erlander last week how he felt
about it. He answered, "it is not
yet necessary to take a decision"
and suggested that next year
would be time enough to raise
the question. The division of
opinion revolves about what ac
tion Russia might take if Sweden
decided to add atomic weapons
to her arsenal . . . Stockholm is
only about 30 seconds away by
missile from the Soviet Baltic
states . . . those opposed to mak
ing atomic weapons say Sweden
could not maintain her neutral
ity if she had them.
Adding Raid Shelters
Meanwhile Sweden is adding
to what must be the strongest
and most impressive system of
deep-rock air raid shelters in any
country. The ,land itself has a
base of ice-age granite. Indust
ries, hospitals and naval and
military posts are now living
and working in caverns with 60
feet or more of solid rock above
them. Enough, it is said, to with
stand anything but a direct hit
from an atomic bomb. The sub
terranean shelters are air-conditioned,
equipped with their own
power supply. Their white-washed
walls look spic and span
under their fluorescent lighting.
Elvis Presley films are play
ing in Sweden ... he appears to
be a bigger hit with the grown
ups than with the youngsters . . .
Elvis is billed as the "rock 'n roll
king."

Two Men Slain
In Labor Turmoil
Guntersville, Ala. nn Two
men were killed today and five
other were wounded when gun
fire erupted at a labor troubled
construction project in this
small Alabama city.
The two victims were identi
fied by police as Johnny Leroy
Ward, Parsons, Kan., who was
hit in the chest by a .22 caliber
bullet, and W. M. Clinton Harri
son, Albertville, Ala., who was
shot in "the back.
Officers " said the shooting
broke out at a new feed mill un
der construction by the Cotton
Producers association. .The con
struction site had been picketed
for the past several days.

Haitian President
Ends Civil War

The inauguration of Daniel !
Fignole as provisional president
of Haiti Sunday ended the coun
try's brief lived civil war. But
the situation remained tense to
day and authorities were pre
pared for new outbreak's.
Airline service to Haiti still
was suspended and hundreds of
Americans were stranded. At
least 80 persons were reported
killed in fighting this week end,
but there were no reports of
American casualties.
A crowd of 10,000 persons
snakedanced through the
streets in joy when Fignole. was
sworn in.
Most of them were from the
low-paid laborer and farm work
er class where he draws his
strength.
Four-Sided Race
Fignole, 42, set up an admin
istration of three of the four
major political parties in what
appeared to be a political deal
to squeeze out Louis DeJoie.
DeJoie, Fignole, Clement Jum
elle and Dr. Francois Duvalier
have been fighting a four-sided
race for the presidency.
Scattered rifle shots still
could be heard through the
city, but the situation generally
was quiet. At the height of the
fighting gun battles raged
through the city and surged
close to the U.S. Embassy which
was hit. by- several bullets.
Police and roving mobs stop
ped automobiles and searched
them for weapons, but the ma
jor disturbances eased off. .
