Trans-Pacific Raft
Sinks; Five-Man
Crew Reported Safe
Santiago, Chile rtPl Hur
ricane winds sank the battered
trans-Pacific raft Tahiti Nui Sun
day. Its five-man crew had
drifted nearly 6,000 miles from
Tahiti in an effort to prove that
South Pacific islanders once
settled the coast of Chile.
The crew of four Frenchmen
and one ' Chilean was safe ' on
board the Chilean frigate Baq
uedano, which answered the
raft's distress signals last Sun
day and took the bamboo craft
in tow. .
The Tahiti Nui broke its tow
cable and went down 240 miles
from Chile's mid-Pacific Juan
Fernandez Island. The expedi
tion's leader, French scientist
Eric de Bisschops, had hoped to
repair the raft there and finish
the voyage to Chile's main port
of Valparaiso.
Route in Reverse
The raftaeft Tahiti last Nov.
8, reversing the ' route of Thor
Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki. Both raft
voyages were made in efforts
to determine whether Polynes
ians originated In South Ameri
ca or sailed there from the Pa
cific Islands.
Garcia Palacios, who handled
publicity here, told the United
Press:
"After seven months on the
high seas covering more than
6,000 miles at the mercy of the
winds and the ocean currents
it has been proved" the trip
could have been completed if it

No Information Given
Room boys and the hotel
housekeeper spirited Rossellini
out of the hotel shortly after 9
p.m. The hotel staff refused to
give out any information and

the city by plane. But police
confirmed the government had
declined to extend his visa and
he is expected to leave India
