Club Given New Name

Shady Cove-Trail A regular
meeting of the Shady Cove Teen
age club, now called the Young
Citizen's club, was held on
Thursday evening, May 23, at
the Parish hall in Shady Cove.
There were 30 members and
guests present. .
Linda Eccleston, who sub
mitted the new name for the
club won the S5 award donated
by the advisory board.
. Elected as officers were presi
dent, Gary Britt; vice president,
Daie Casey; secretary-treasurer,
Linda Eccleston and correspond
ing secretary, JeanAnn Morgan.
Members of the Advisory
Board present were Mrs. Clar
ence Meyer, Mrs. Arnold Win
slow and Mrs. Fred Morgan. Re
freshments were served follow
ing the meeting. The, next ac
tivity planned is a swimming
party to be held at the Dick
Pfeifer pool on 'Friday, May
31. A dance will also be held
and refreshments will be. served.
The regular monthly meeting
of the Rogue Rockhounds was
held Tuesday evening, May 21
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
John Dodge, of Medford.
Announcement of the Rock
Show to be held at Grants' Pass
June 22 and 23 was made. It
was decided to have a field trip
on Sunday, June 16, up Indian
creek, with everyone who would
like to go meeting at 9 a.m. at
the Indian creek bridge and
bring a sack lunch.

Mrs. Rufus Trusty has just
returned from Klamath Falls,
where she has been taking care
of her grandchildren while their
mother is away on a trip.
Mrs. Fred Rolland, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Olen Lewellen,
of Shady Cove, left last week
for San Francisco to meet her
husband, who was due 'to arrive
at the airport there from Kara
chi, Pakistan.
Rolland has been employed in
Pakistan for the past six months
by Morrison-Knudson Construc
tion company. They plan on tak
ing a vacation before returning
home.
The Shady Cove Chapter of
the Oregon Sportsmen club held
a regular meeting Friday eve
ning, May 24, at the Community
hall in Prospect. All sportsmen
in the area were urged to attend.

Elder and son, attended a family
"get-together" at the home of
Jesse Elder of Central Point on
Sunday, May 19.
The occasion for the reunion
was the celebration of the 86th
birthday of G. S. Elder Sr., of
Medford, a former resident of
Trail. He is the father of Dean
and Bud Elder and grandfather
of Russell Elder. The 35 rela
tives present had a potluck buf
fet supper. "Grandpa" Elder, as
he is known, was presented a
birthday calce with 86 candles
and he accomplished the feat of
blowing them all out.

Shady Cove received a long dis
tance phone call on Tuesday
from Canada, conveying the
news that her brother, Jerry
Roach, of Rosetown, Sask., had

spent the week end visiting with

Mrs. Billie Minter, of Las
Vegas, Nev., has been visiting
her niece and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Sheppard, of Shady

Bob Eastgate, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Allen Eastgate, of Medford,
and grandson of Mr. and Mrs.
Travis Littlefield, of Shady Cove,
is a member of the 1957 gradu
ating class at Medford High
school.
Returning to their home at
Trail, after a 4 and a half year
stay in Long Beach, are Mr. and
Mrs. Nick Hahn. They are stay
ing at the Oaks Court while
they are getting their trailer
ready to live in.
Two other Shady Cove resi
dents, who have been visiting
in Long Beach, have returned
to their homes in Shady Cove.
Mrs. Mary Chapman was in
Long Beach for several weeks
with her daughter, and Mrs.
Glenn Collins has been visiting
her mother, Mrs. O. B. Stark,
in Long Beach, since Mother's
Day.
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Elrod and
daughter, Mary Ann, of Trail,
were guests at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Jantzer of Shady

Mrs. Edna Hawley, of Med
ford, is spening a month or so
at her summer home on the
river. Recently a family reunion
was held at her home, with a
large number of relatives pres
ent. Mrs. C. L. Neil of Ashland,
Ore., has been visiting her
daughter and family, Mr. and
Mrs. John Dickenson of Shady
Cove. She came over to attend
the wedding of her grandson,
Gerald Symens, son of Mrs. Dick
enson, to Miss Lena Tibbetts,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lind
say Tibbetts of Eagle Point.
The marriage took place at
the Eagle Point Community
church on May 9. The couple;
honeymooned at the coast. They
then returned to the Dickenson
home where they spent the. rest
of Jerry's leave time before he
had to return to Fair child Air
Base, near Spokane. Both Mr.
and Mrs. Symens are graduates
of Eagle Point High school.
Charles Turner, son of Walter
Turner, of Trail, spent some-'
time visiting with Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Turner recently. He is
a baritone and has been a mem
ber of the Haven of Rest quartet
for the past 15 years. Turner;
recently returned from New ,
Zealand, where he was on a
missionary tour, and at present
he and the Rev. and Mrs. Den
nis Snell, missonaries from Mex
ico City, who also visited in
Trail, are engaged in non-denominational
missionary work trav
eling through the northwest and
Canada.
Other recent ifsitors of the
Turners have been Mrs. Turn
er's sister and family, Mr. and
Mrs. G. Ristpw of Tacoma,
Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Beeson
of Boise, Idaho, and Mr. and
Mrs. J. O. Clemens of Long
Beach.
Clemens is a retired policeman
from Long Beach and they are
on an extended tour of the Unit
ed States. The Turners also held
a potluck dinner at their home
on the river for a group of re
tired Long Beach police officers
and their wives. Attending were
Mr. and Mrs. William Brown, of
Ashland, Mr. and Mrs. George
Lyons, of Rouge River, Mr. and
Mrs. Chester Jenks, of Gold
Hill, and the host and hostess,
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Turner.

and family made a trip to Lake

D. A. Minor.
Shady Cove Grange held a
potluck dinner and social meet
ing Wednesday evening, May
22, at the Shady Cove- school.
Following the dinner, a talk
was given by Sgt. Eaton and
Sgt. Crats on the State Highway
department on highway safety,
with films being shown. A num
ber of members will attend the
Pomona meeting in Central
Point, Saturday, May 25.
The Shady Cove HEU met at
the horre of Mrs. Max Hawks,
of Shady Cove, Tuesday, May
21. The lesson for the meeting
was re-upholstering kitchen
chairs with Mrs. Louis Dusen
berry as the project leader. Co-
hostesses were Mrs. John Loper,
Mrs. Jesse Lowery, and Mrs. Wil-

of his death on Sunday.
Dr. and Mrs. Paul Olsen and
Mr. Alvin Perkins, of Shady
Cove, were hosts this past week
end to three sisters of Mrs.
Olsen and Mr. Perkins, who
cajme from the opposite ends of
the United States. This was the
first time in 22 years that all
been together.
Mrs. Loren E. Snyder of Odes
sa, Tex., spent 10 days visiting
with the Olsen's and Mr. Perk
ins and the two sisters and their
husbands, from Washington,
came down for the reunion. They
are Mr. and Mrs. Otto Olsen of
Seattle, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs.

Cove, has had letters from her
husband in Ketchikan, Alaska,
to the effect that he likes Ket
chikan and that there is a church
there with an organ and a small
orchestra comprised of members
of the church. He is employed
by the Ketchikan pulp mill. Mrs.
Curren is going up to Alaska
to be with him this summer,
but plans to return to Shady
Cove in the fall.
The Rev. and Mrs. Charles
McClintic, of the Assembly of
God church in Shady Cove, are
the parents of a baby girl born
May 19 in Lakeview, Ore. The
baby, who has been named Lyn
ette Rachael, is the couples first
child. Mr. and Mrs. McClintic
are still at Lakeview.
The Shady Cove Rotary club
sponsored a "ladies night"
Thursday evening, May 23, at
the VFW hall in Shady Cove. A
turkey dinner was prepared and
served by members of the VFW
Ladies Auxiliary.
Two films were shown, one
of interest to the Rotarians, as
it was on guns and hunting,
and the . other one, of interest
to the ladies, on the American
rose varieties, and prize winning
flowers.
Another Ladies Night was ten
tatively planned for June 6, as
there will be a special speaker
that evening.
Construction is progressing on
the new TV shop in Shady Cove
which is located next to the
Kenneth Oliver residence. The
Olivers will own and manager
the shop.
One feature of the building
is the fire-proof metal roof. Cecil
Kee is putting up the building,
assisted by Oliver. The building
is to be divided into three rooms,
consisting of a salesroom, work
shop and stock room. A complete
line of parts for radios, TVs
and appliances will be carried,
which includes ranges, automatic
washers and dryers.'
The formal dedication of
Our Lady of Fatima church in
Shady Cove will be held June
16 at the church.
The annual Father's day din
ner will be served after the
dedication. Mrs. Fred Morgan,
chairman of the dinner, is select
ing her committees. Further
plans will be announced later.

Named to SOC Offices
Ashland Three Medford stu
dents were recently elected class
officers for the 1957-58 school
year at Southern Oregon college.
William Gilinsky, sophomore,
son of Mrs. Leona D. Gilinsky,

was elected president of the jun
ior class. Marilyn Bailey, sopho
more, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Surface Rights
Claims to Be
The Medford district of the
bureau of land management will
publish a formal public notice
on the determination of surface
rights on mining claims in the
Elliott creek area, located in the
Applegate river watershed in
northern California.
Publication of the notice,
which was requested by the for
est service, will appear; in local
newspapers for nine consecutive
weeks.
Owner of a mining claim lo
cated prior to July 23, 1955, will
have 150 days after the first
publication to assert surface
rights.
If a claimant ignores the "no
tice, rights to the surface are
waived, although original min
ing rights are maintained, ac
cording to forest service officals.
The claimant will have his claim
examined by mineral examiners
if he files a verified statement
asserting surface rights.
If : the claimants rights are
considered valid, the forest serv
ice will , recognize such rights
and not' attempt to control the
surface resources under the new
multiple-use mining law of July
23, 1955.

Both the claimant and the for
est service will present their
testimony at the hearing. What
ever the decision, the claimant
will retain mineral rights, for

Father, Son Taken;
To Start Sentences
Grants Pass William Clai
ence Schleigh, 54, and his 28-year-old
son William Lester,
both of Wolf Creek, were taken
to the state penitentary Thurs
day to begin sentences for set
ting fire on forest land.
They were arrested on Sept.
6, 1944, near the scene of a
series of fires which they were
charged with starting along Coy
yote Creek rd., near Wolf Creek.
They were convicted by a cir
cuit jury in November, 1955,
and each sentenced to an 18
month prison term.
The two men had been free
on bail pending outcome of their
appeal to the state supreme
court.' The supreme court up
held the convictions in ApriL
