Plumley, McLaughlin
Plan To Attend OSC
Two of Medford High school's
star athletes, who will receive
their diplomas this spring, have
announced they will enter Orer
gon State college next fall.
'(The two are Dick McLaugh
lin and Neil Plumley. They will
attend on football grants in aid.
Both have been three sports
men at Medford high. McLaugh
lin is ' a three-year monogram
winner in football and basket
ball and a four-year varsity let
terman in baseball. Plumley has
collected three varsity awards
in football and track and two in
baseball.
Probably the highest honor
which has come to a Black Tor
nado gridder was realized by
Plumley when he was named to
the Wigwam Wisemen's 1956
prep All-American second team.
The big tackle was named to
the Portland Oregonian and Ore
gon Journal all-state first elev
ens. He and McLaughlin, a quar
terback, are all-Southern Ore
gon conference footballers. Both
will represent Medford next
August in the Shrine all-star
game in Portland.
Second Team All-State
McLaughlin, a forward, was
named to the second all-state
basketball team in 1956 when
Medford was runner-up for the
state championship. He was on
the Oregonian's third football
eleven last fall. Like Plumley in
football, McLaughlin has twice
made the all-conference first
team in basketball. Plumley, a
center, was named to the loop's
No. 2 all:state cage crew two
seasons.
Principal track accomplish
ment by Plumley this spring has
been two efforts of more than
60 feet in the shotput. He is be
lieved to be the first Oregon
prepper to bust the 60-foot bar
rier, at least under meet condi
tions. Through his Black Tornado
baseball career McLaughlin has
played mainly as a catcher.
However, this season he has
been Medford's top pitcher, han
dling the receiving chores when
not hurling.
' McLaughlin is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. L. C. McLaughlin, 3384
Jacksonville highway. Plumley's
parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. D.
Plumley, 906 North Central ave.

enabled SOTA to replace timing
clocks with a set which is -superior
in every way, officials of
the association have reported.
The new electronic clocks will
time anything which cuts its
light beam.
For spectators the area from
which the races can be watched
is improved as are concessions
facilities. Public restrooms have
been provided and there is a new
public address system.
Club officers said that it is
their belief that by having a drag
strip and administering a race
program in a safe manner they
are helping to make streets and
highways safer for public use.
They feel that many who like
to participate in the sport will
compete on the strip and not on
the public roads.
Process of Elimination
The strip in west Camp White
is one-fourth mile long. Cars are
clocked for attained speed at the
end of the one-fourth mile
stretch. The electronic timers are
accurate to 11,000 of a second.
Vehicles are classified and their
speeds recorded during lime
trails. Then they are matched
against each other. Class winners
are determined by a process of
elimination.
Trophies will be presented this
week to all first place winners.
National Hot Rod association
rules will be enforced at SOTA
drag races. Drivers are required
to provide waivers releasing the
timing association from liability.
Adult drivers may sign the waiv
ers when they register. Parents
or guardians must sign waivers
for minors.
The drag strip is seven miles
north of Medford off Crater
Lake highway. Signs will be
posted from the Y at the north
edge of Medford indicating the
way to the strip.
