Take Shape on Colorado Prairie

atop a mile-and-a-half high mesa
in the shadow of Colorado's
Pikes Peak.

ings where the nation's future
air leaders will be housed and
trained rises six stories above
the sage and buffalo grass. Giant
earth-moving machinery, some
times working around the clock,
is pushing and forming the re
sistant Colorado earth into
shapes suitable for landing fields,
parade g r o u n ds, and all the
amenities and facilities neces
sary to a great university of the
air.
Favored By Pioneers
Thus the dream of such
pioneer airmen as the late Billy
Mitchell and Henry H. "Hap"
Arnold, General of the Air
Force, becomes reality.
It was the dream, too, of the
late Secretary of Defense James
Forrestal who took the first
step toward creation of the Air
Force Academy in 1949, when he
appointed a Service Academy
Board to plan such an institu
tion. -The Board, whose member
included Charles A. Lindbergh,
inspected 400 proposed sites in
every section of the country. The
location ten miles north of Colo
rado Springs where high prair
ies meet the Rockies finally
was chosen because of the vast
Graham Pleased
With Crusade
New York W Evangelist
Billy Graham said Thursday
night his ambitious New York
Crusade so far has "given me a
feeling down deep, a glorious
sensing in my soul that it will
be a great success."
He said in an interview with
the United Press following his
ninth sermon in Madison Square
Garden that "this conviction,
and how it progresses or re
gresses, will be the deciding fac
tor as to whether we end the cru
sade June 30, as scheduled, or
run it through the summer."
Graham said that another
great factor was "the number of
decisions for Christ that come
out of our meetings here." He
said .that so far the 5,830 "de
cisions" made by New Yorkers
in the first nine days of the cru
sade has made him feel "better
than I have in my life."
Thursday night, an estimated
765 persons came forward to
make decisions for Christ fol
lowing Graham's sermon on
"The Spiritual Disease of The
Heart."
New Hampshire sportsmen
have really taken to archery.
Some 20 tournaments were
scheduled by local clubs in 1957
and the state also provides spe
cial seasons for hunting deer
with bows and arrows.

pleted, will be an added attrac
tion to one of the most pictur
esque areas in the United States.
Colorado Springs, with an area
population of more than 100,000,
already is host to 1,500,000 vaca
tionists each year. It is the usual
point of departure for the climb
to the summit of 14,110-foot
Pikes Peak.

augurated in May by Continental
Trailways, is unique. Two art
iculated, German-built buses 60
feet long will make several trips
a day, linking Colorado Springs

and Pueblo. The buses have

the view, hostesses, snack bars,
and seats that not only recline
but also adjust sideways to ac
commodate any hip width.

(Satchmo) Armstrong and his
jazz trumpet had the island of
Jamaica "jumping" today. Arm
strong and his band are appear
ing at the Carib Theater and
playing to packed houses.
But he drew his biggest audi
ence, more than 100,000, at a
public performance at George VI
Memorial Park Tuesday night.

Russian Men Should Never Wear Pajamas
At Dinner Table in Presence of Guests
Moscow (IP) One of the hard
est things to lay hands on in
Moscow today is a little book
with the misleading title, "For
Healty Living" issued by the
"Society for Dissemination of
Political and Scientific Know
ledge." Had it been published in the
United States it would have
been called "Good Manners" or
"Etiquette." It is hard to get
because it is so popular.
It is the closest the Russians
have come to Emily Post and
they preface it with a note that
while bourgeois manners are
only a shrewd coverup for a
"man's true face," the manners
of the Soviet man "reveal his
great culture."
For example:
Eat Heartily
On eating: "Some think that
a guest should eat as little as
possible. Nothing could be more
contary to good manners. When
visiting, just as at home, satisfy
your appetite." '
On dress: "Men may wear
pajamas about the house, but
only with a shirt underneath.
Pajamas are never to be worn
at the table when guests are
present."
, One of the' curious things
about this country is that Rus
sian men use their pajamas for
almost anything but sleeping.
They serve as lounging clothes
on long train trips and as that
"little something thrown on"
to go to the corner store for
the morning newspaper.
On. drinking: "Women should
not drink vodka, cognac or other
strong spirits. There ought to be
red wine on the table for them."
