Hildy Turns Attention
To School as Court
Rejects Extradition

their home happily celebrated
her first grade graduation today,
knowing for. the first time they
will always belong to each other.
Hildy, 6, was to make the wel
coming speech to parents and
act and dance in a rendition of
from infancy. They will be per
mitted to live in Florida and
rear Hildy as a Jew, even though
she was born to a Roman
Catholic mother.
Hildy's mother, who put her
up for adoption and changed
her mind when she learned the
Ellises were Jewish, sought to
have Hildy placed in an orphan
"Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs" in ceremonies at the
Lear Private School.
But no fairy tale could match
the real-life drama for Mr. and
Mrs. Melvin B. Ellis, Thursday
before Gov. -Leroy Collins at
Tallahassee.
Extradition Request Denied
Collins announced late Thurs
day after a hearing that he is
denying a petition to extradite
the Jewish couple to Massachu
setts where they would face
charges of kidnaping the blonde,
age for adoption by a Roman
Catholic family. Massachusetts
courts upheld her.
The Child's Rights
, Collins, a Protestant father of
four children, said he recognized
the birthright of religious faith,
but added:
"The great and good God of
all , of us, regardless of faith,
grants to every child to be born:
First, the right to be wanted
and secondly, the right, to be
loved."
The Ellises, he said, had ful
filled these rights for Hildy.
The kidnaping charges filed
14 montths after the Jewish
couple fled Massachusetts with
Hildy were legally "synthetic,"
Collins said.
The executive decision cannot
be appealed. Collins denied Mas
sachusetts authorities permission
to file additional briefs.
The Ellises have filed proceed
ings in a Miami circuit court for
adoption of Hildy under Florida
laws.

High school seniors will gradu
ate during the school's 38th com
mencement Friday evening, May
they have reared
31. in the school gymnasium.
The class will be presented
by class president, Ronald Wein-
hold. The salutatory address will
be given by Marlys Whillock
and Richard Bradford will de
liver the valedictory speech.
Dr. R. W. McNeal, of South
ern Oregon college, will speak at
commencement exercises. Diplo
mas will be presented by W. R.
Bagley, chairman of the school
board.
Baccalaureate will be held at
11 a.m. May 26, Sunday, in the
school gymnasium. The Rev.
Alice May Woolley will deliver
a talk and the Rev. Leroy Nei
fert will give the invocation and
benediction.
North Bend Hotel
Padlocked by City
North Bend (IP) The Hotel
North Bend, located at the North
Bend airport, has been padlocked
by city officials for non-payment
of back taxes.
City Administrator Robert
Herrington said today the hotel
and three apartment buildings,
converted from officers' quarters
at the wartime naval training
station, would be vacated by
June 1. They were purchased in
1947 by Guy McCauley and Art
Pepin for $35,000. Herrington
said $2,000 was still owing on the
purchase price and that $13,500
in back taxes had not been paid.
