White House Enters
Dispute With Japan
Over Soldier's Trial
Washington (W The White
House today stepped into a dis
pute over whether the United
States or Japan should try an
American soldier for the slaying
of a Japanese woman.
Informed sources said a high
level decision could be expected
soon.
The case has become a news
paper sensation in Japan where
some elements demand the right
to try Army Specialist 3-c Wil
liam S. Girard of Ottawa, 111.
They contend that American re
fusal to turn Girard over to
Japanese courts violates the
U.S.-Japanese status of forces
agreement and infringes on Jap
anese sovereignty. - j
Relations Worsened
State Department officials are
concerned because the affair has
caused a worsening of Japanese
American relations on the eve
of a visit to the United States
by Japanese Premier Nobusuke
Kishi. Kishi is due here June 10
for talks with Eisenhower and
other officials.
Army Secretary Wilber M
Brucker was said to have raised
the case at a meeting he at
tended Tuesday between Presi
dent Eisenhower and Republi
can congressional leaders.
Brucker later discussed the
matter with Secretary of State
John Foster Dulles and other
State Department officials. It
was decided to ask Tokyo for
more details.

Proposed Association
Fails at Medford High
Because of a lack of parent
support, the proposed Medford
High parent-teacher-student as
sociation failed to win a major
ity vote to organize last night.
A total of 106 people out of a
possible 1,000 students, 2,000
parents, and 50 teachers cast 50
votes for and 56 votes against
forming a PTSA at Medford
High school.
The meeting, held in the high
school auditorium, was opened
by Mrs. Leigh Gustison, first
vice-president of the state Con
gress of Parent-Teacher associa
tions. The motion to organize
was called for and after parents
and faculty hesitated, a student,
Jacque Colton, made the mo
tion. James Johnston, MHS physics
instructor, gave three reasons for
teacher disapproval of the or
ganization. Among chief arguments
against the proposal was that
too many conflicting organiza
tions for both parents and teach
ers exist in Medford now. A
second point was that the PTSA
movement was instigated and
continued without proper ex
planation to or criticism from
the Medford High faculty. The
third and more important reason
wag poor support from parents
shown by lack of parent attend
ance and previous indifference
toward YMCA youth functions.
