The Medical Roundup
Facing the Painful Word
. In a recent article, Mrs. Ade
lyn Pagenstecher told of her ex
perience with her daughter,
Mari, who was born without
proper hearing ;
apparatus. She
tells of the
great distress
she felt the day
it suddenly
came over her
that the child
could not hear
a word. Then
came the spe
cial schooling
that enabled the child to talk.
The authorities at the Tracy Clin
ic tried to help the mother to
face things, because, as they said,
if the parents do not progress,
neither will the child. A mother
with a handicapped child tends
to go to extremes: she is either
too over-protective and too close
to the child, or she tends to be
come detached, embarrassed, and
filled with unwarranted shame.
Then, one day, came the shock
of a letter in which the Clinic
people wrote, "You must pre
pare to send your little deaf child
away to school." The very word
deaf hurt the mother terribly;
she had never used it; she and
her husband had always spoken
of "hearing loss," or "doesn't
hear well,", or "impaired hear
ing," or they just avoided speak
ing of it. Finally, the mental
block was broken through by a
stranger woman who spoke over
the phone. She said, 'You mean
your daughter is deaf." "No,
please," said the mother, "don't
use that word; Mari's hearing is
impaired." "No," said the wom
an, "Listen to me; I don't want
to hurt you but I do this for
your sake. Say the word 'deaf
over and over, because that's
what your child is. You have got
to learn to face it and to live
with that word."
Courage Praised
All praise to Mrs. Pagen
stecher for her great courage in
writing this, and for the service
she has done to all grief-stricken
mothers who have a loved one
handicapped in some way. Let
all of us who have in the family
one who is insane, or feeble
minded, or epileptic learn to use
the terrible word freely, without
shuddering and without any feel
ing of shame. It is the only wise
thing to do; it is the first step
along the road to helping the
loved one get better.
The next great step is to join
one of the National Associations
organized to help persons who
are handicapped in the way your
child is. Then you will not feel
quite so alone in your grief; you
will have joined with hundreds
of thousands of other men and
women who are sorrowing just
as you are sorrowing. If you can
contribute something to the
funds that are being raised for
the study of the particular tlis
ease and the discovery of some
way of avoiding it or curing it,
that also will be good.
When I was a boy, 60 years
ago, tuberculosis was a terrible
pestilence, crippling and maim
ing millions of children and kill
ing millions of grown-ups. Prac
tically nothing was being done
about it because people were too
ashamed even to talk about it.
I remember people who let sev
eral of their children die of it,
rather than admit that is ran in
their family. They didn't want
ever to go to a hospital with it
for fear the neighbors would una
why they had gone. Only when
people developed the courage to
admit freely that they had tuber
culosis, and only when they be
gan to use that dread word, were
doctors able to build sanatoria
and to get people into them early
enough so that they could get
well. As a result, in the last 50
years, the . mortality rate from
tuberculosis has gone steadily
down and down, until today
some of the original sanatoria,
for lack of patients, are closing
their doors.
Again I say, let us all learn
to face and use the hard word,
even though the sound of it cuts
into us like a knife.

Today, it is the fashion' to
teach that there is nothing to
heredity, and everything about
men and women is due to their
environment in childhood. My
feeling is that no open-minded
person with three or four broth
ers and sisters can believe such
a thing. Many brothers and sist
ers who grew up together on a
lonely ranch with certainly the
same environment are so dif
ferent that one can hardly be
lieve that they are related. One
may be an almost rubber stamp
copy of his father's, while an
other may be just like a brother
of his mother.
I thought of this as I read n
article by H. W. Nissen on the
great individuality in the temp
erament and behavior of the 57
chimpanzees that have been born
and reared in the remarkably
uniform environment of the
great Yerkes laboratory of Pri
mate Biology. As he says, these
apes show behavior as distinc
tive as that of "an equal number
of people drawn from any place
on earth." Some are affectionate
and some are not; some are ag
gressive and some are submis
sive; a few are clever mechanic
ally, and most are not.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
not be possible for him answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
