shown by White House aides in
granting the tax writeoffs td
Idaho Power Co. The writeoffs
were for construction of two
Snake River dams.

closely" to determine whether
Gray's refusal to answer was
"legitimate." He said Gray
would be recalled for further
questioning.
Gray balked when Kefauver
reduced an Office of Defense
Mobilization memorandum
-hich bore the names "Adams,
Persons, Pyle and Morgan" in
pencil at the top.
The defense mobilizer said
the notations referred to presi
dential assistant Sherman
Adams; Gen. Wilson B. Persons,
President Eisenhower's legisla
tive liaison officer; presidential
aide Howard Pyle; and Gerald
P. Morgan, counsel to the Presi
dent. Refuied To Answer
Gray also declined to reply
when he was asked specifically
if Adams had made any "sugges
tion" regarding the Idaho Pow
er decision.
"I can't answer that," Gray
aid.
"You mean you can't or
won't?" Kefauver asked.
Mayflower II Reported

II reached a point 2,200 miles
from England today on the 32nd
day of its voyage to the New
World.
The reported position showed
that the Mayflower II, replica of
the ship that carried the Pilgrim
Fathers to America, had made
100 miles in the past 24 hours.
Central Point Boy
Injured in Crash
Gary Douglas Wald, 13-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth
Wald. Second and Oak sts., Cen
tral Point, suffered arm and
head injuries when the car he
was driving went out of control
and rolled over on Upton rd.
i about 8:30 p.m. yesterday, ac
cording to state police.
Two passengers, Kenneth
Vernon Wald Jr., 15, and Don
ald Brood Gillaspey, 15, of
route 1, box 129, Central Point,
suffered cuts and bruises. All
three were taken to Rogue Val
ley hospital by Central Point po
lice. Kenneth Wald and Gillas
pey were released after treat
ment, police said.
The accident occurred when
the vehicle, headed south on Up
ton rd., skidded sideways on
loose gravel on the shoulder and
turned over, police said.
No citations were issued by
state police in connection with
the accident.

Bing Crosby to Expand Golf
Tourney to $40,000 Purse

Crosby National Pro-Amateur
Golf tournament, branded by
many-as "the most important in
the world," will be expanded to
four days, 72 holes and a $40,
000 purse next year.
To some of the nation's top
golfers the tourney had become
a "headache," they complained
because the purse was too
small, the weather at Pebble
Beach was bad, they had to play
with amateurs, etc.
But the reason this golf tour
ney is so important is the fact
that in its 16 years of operation
it has turned over $350,000 to
charities.
.There had been rumors for
several years that Der Bingle
would abandon the tourney com
pletely. Then followed the re
port after the last January event
that it would be expanded. Now
comes the official announce
ment from the Professional Golf
ers association headquarters in
Dunedin. Fla., that everything is
expanded.
Refused to Play
Down through the years I've
heard players complain they
wouldn't play in the Crosby
tourney if they were "guaran
teed first prize."
These were some of the top
professional golfers who "had it
made" they had a reputation
and money in the bank.
For that reason, some of the
fields in recent years have been
short of the big names.
"But they have the wrong idea
entirely," says National Open
champion Dr. Cary Middlecoff.
"They don't realize how much
Bing Crosby has done for the
game of golf and how much
he has helped promote our live
lihood. "And those who refuse to play

thing that all of us have to play
in at one time or another and it

In boosting the purse and in
creasing the length of .play from
54 to 72 holes, there is one thing
that generally has been over
looked: the fact that it is going
to cost Crosby a lot more money
out of his own pocket.

for "Spring Time In Paree," the

created the attractive and spa

A painted street scene with
French shops, cafes, and garbage
cans with "Keep Paree' Clean"
painted on them, formed the
background for dining tables
that gave that section of the audi
torium the out-door French cafe
air.
A slide of the Napoleon Arch,
as seen in Paris Square, was pro
jected on a screen in front of the
curtains on the stage. The Eiffel
Tower, painted on a back drop,
was over the band stand.
The queen and king's throne
rested high over the dance floor
with several steps leading up to
it. The throne was decorated
with varied colors of flowers and
greenery.
Music was provided by "The
Van Dyke Trio" organized by
John Drysdale.
Intermission events were a
dance done by the "Ayres
Twins," "When Apples Grow on
a Lilac Tree" and 'T Could Have
Danced All Night" sung by Mrs.
Stanley Lacy and accompanied
by Mrs. Drew, and the corona
tion of the King and Queen.
John Lacy announced the
Queen, Elains Jennings, and the
King, David Wood. The prin
cesses and princes were Molly
Barker, Jackie Mee, Karen Mor
lan, Karen Walton, Marcia Bar
rel!, Mike Parsons, Jim Miles,
Mike Reich, Henry Olson, and
Perry Whitlock.
Refreshments were free colces
donated by Wayne Jamison and
cookies served by eighth grade
waitresses dressed in French cos
tumes with berets.
Various games were backstage
for people who preferred recrea
tion rather than dancing.
Chaperons were Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Somers, Mr. and Mrs. William
Barker, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mor
lan," M. and Mrs. C. H. Barrell
and ninth grade faculty advisers.

chairman was Paul Moore, pro
gram chairman, Molly Barker,
and hospitality chairman, Henry
Olson.

boxer versus puncher bout that
should keep the customers on
the edge of their chairs.
The odds favoring Lane in the
nationally televised 10 -round
scrap have shortened from 3-1
to 2-1 since Brown arrived and
displayed his sparring wares in
the West Side gym.
Lane has beaten the best of
the 135-pounders and has no rea
son to fear Brown, a Philadel
phian. But he has reason to be
wary. Brown has won 26 of 30
bouts, with 24 knockouts and
two draws.

265 Measles Cases
Reported in County
A total of 265 cases of measles,
109 in Asshland and 75 in Med
ford, were reported, to the Jack
son county health department
for the week ending May 17, ac
cording to Dr. A. Erin Merkel,
public health physician.
Other cases of measles were
reported in Central Point 34,
Talent 18, Jacksonville 10, Pros
pect eight, Lone Pine seven,
Eagle Point three and Shady
Cove one.
Thirty-five other communic
able diseases were reported to
the county health office last
week, Dr. Merkel said.
They included influenza four,
Medford; chicken pox 13, Med
ford seven and Ashland six;
strep throat three, Central Point
two and Medford one; infectious
hepatitis one, Medford; German
measles six, Medford three, Cen
tral Point two and Ashland one;
whooping cough one, Central
Point; pink eye two, Medford
and Jacksonville; rheumatic fev
er two, Ashland; trench mouth
two, Talent and Gold Hill; and
pneumonia one, Central Point.

Stephens, police judge of surbur-
ban Edmundson, decided it was j

about dogs running loose in the
community.
City Marshal C. V. Mayberry,
ordered to issue warrants against
offenders, took action promptly.
He found Stephens' dog in a
neighbor's yard and delivered a
warrent to the judse.
Stephens assessed a fine of $1
and court costs of S3 against
himself, warning that the pen
alty would be doubled against
second offenders.
He said he would try to avoid
such a fate.
Petition Filed for
School Board Position
Ashland Archie Fries Jr. has
filed a petition for candidacy in
the Ashland school district 5
director election June 17.
His nominating petition was
filed at the office of the school
superintendent earlier this week.
Fries is seeking to fill the one
vacancy on the board this year.
Dr. Marshall Woodell, present
chairman of the board, has said
he will not be a candidate for
reelection.
Fries is manager of the Ash
land branch of the U.S. National
bank, Rotary club and chamber
of commerce director and mem
ber of the city park commission
and the city planning commis
sion. He is also a member of the
Shakespearean Festival board of
directors and has been active in
several other civic and charita
ble functions.

Association President
Dr. Alva Graham, Southern
Oregon college, was elected
president of the Southern Ore
gon Child Guidance Clinic asso
ciation Monday.
Elected to serve with him
were Mrs. Earl Lawson, vice

urer. New board members intro
duced were Mrs. Albert Bam
forth, Rogue River; Mrs. Allyn

Radiation May Give Army Fresh Foods

ned experiments for a new food
radiation center here.
The Army recently awarded

electronics firm, a contract for
construction of an electron linear
accelerator to test ionizing radi
ation.
Varian representatives said
program of feeding irradiated
food to human, volunteers has
been proceeding over a period
of many months. Frequent medi

harmful effects from the ir
radiated diet.
Beaverton Man Saved
From Cave-in of Ditch
Washougal, Wash. IP)
George Sipe, 62, Beaverton, was
rescued Tuesday after being
buried under a foot of mud when
a sewer ditch caved in at the
site of a new high school under
construction here.
Workmen said Sipe was in the
ditch erecting cribbing when the
sides gave way. The accident oc
curred about 1:30 p.m. He was
removed about 2 p.m. and taken
to a Vancouver hospital.
