joined in 1924, and was a captain when he
flew the Atlantic. He is now a brigadier
general in the Air Force.
Stewart joined the Air Force as a private
in 1941 and came out in 1945 with a colonel's
rank, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the
Air Medal, and an Oak Leaf Cluster. He is
still active in the reserve.
During the war, Jimmy flew across the
South Atlantic a shorter hop than Lind
bergh's from 'Brazil to Africa. It took him
and his crew in a four-engine B-24 just 14 Vi
hours a far cry from Lindy's single-engine
flying time of 33 Vfe hours!
Make-up experts on the Warner Brothers

Stewart look like the Lindbergh of 1927.
They took some 20 years off his appearance,
bleached his hair, and changed the part in it.
With their common love for flying and
physical resemblance, it's easy to see why
Jimmy Stewart was the perfect choice to
play the Lone Eagle.
