Portland Subdues Solons;
Pads Keep Up Losing Ways
By DON THACKERY
United Press Sports Writer
The San Diego Padres were
supposed to make a big splash in
the Pacific Coast league this
year, but so far it has just been
made by the unrecommended
changing of horses in mid-stream.
Thursday, the Padres switched
from Manager Bob Elliott to
Manager George Metkovich.
But Thursday night they re
turned to their losing ways and
were dumped 9-4 by the Van
couver Mounties.
Farther up the PCL ladder the
Hollywood Stars got more
breathing room by beating 'Se
attle 3-1 while San Francisco
was blanking second-place Los
Angeles 6-0. Portland kept tread
ing away at the long climb to
the first division by taking care
of Sacramento 5-2.
Jergensen Homers Twic
" Spider Jorgensen took care of
all the runs the Mounties needed
with two home runs and a single
that drove five tallies across.
Jim Marshall also whacked out a
homer for the Mounties to help
make Metkovich's debut an un-
success.
Portland had sloppy Sacra
mento playing to thank for its
victory. The Solons had a 2-0
lead going into the eighth and
Joe Stanka had a three-hitter.
Then, after two were out, the
Sacramento infield committed
three errors and awarded Port
land foua unearned runs. The
final Portland run, which came
in the ninth, was also of the un
merited variety on another boot
by a Sacramento infielder.
John Briggs got the win and
the luckless Stanka the loss.

GEORGE METKOVICH NAMED
TO MANAGE SAN DIEGO NINE
.i San Diego (IT) Ralph Kiner,
general manager of the Pacific
Coast league San Diego Padres,
yesterday dismissed Bob Elliott
as manager.
Kiner immediately named
George Metkovich, veteran out
fielder and first baseman, as new
manager. He is 36.
Kiner said Elliott was offered
the position as assistant general
manager but turned it down.
He said Metkovich signed a
one-year contract.
"Elliott is being dismissed to
help the morale of the team,"
Kiner said.
Metkovich joined the Padres
this spring, being purchased
from Louisville. Kiner said he
would not be a playing manager.

Tight Tiff For Team
Honors in PCC Meet
University of Oregon, Eugene
A tight team battle and a num
ber of top duels for individual
championships feature the 27th
running of the Pacific conference
track and field championships at
Hayward field today and Satur
day. UCLA's Bruins, who ended the
long domination of the Southern
California Trojans last spring,
were expected to have a tough
time defending their team title
against the USC crew this year.
The Bruins are hopeful their
strength in the running events
will offset the power of the Tro
jans in the field events.
Stanford, Oregon and Cali
fornia figured to be locked in a
tight race for third spot and may
hurt the Bruins in the sprints
and hurdles as well as the middle
distance races while the Trojans
didn't face as tough a challenge
in the field events.
Eight defending champions re
turned with Bob Voiles and Ron
Morris of the Trojans in the jave
lin and pole vault and the USC
relay team contending. Bernie
Nelson of Stanford in the highs,
Rafer Johnson and Dick Knaub
of UCLA faced a tough time
ahead in the low hurdles and
broad jump. Jim Bailey of Ore
gon may not defend in the mile,
but may go after UCLA's Bob
Seaman in the 880, where the
Bruin ace is the champion.
There may be several meet
records broken. The 100-yard
dash mark of 9.6 may fall before
Leamon King of California or
Oregon's Steve Anderson. The
same is true in the 220, where
the record is now 21.0. Bailey,
Seaman, Cal's Don Bowden and
USC's Tom Anderson can all
crack the mark of 1:51.6 in the

Martin Has
Fallen Out
With Casey
New York HH Billy Mar
tin, Casey Stengel's "boy," has
fallen out of grace with his New
York Yankee bosses, and because
of his part in the Hank Bauer
nightclub brawl may be headed
for Washington in a multi-player
deal.
Martin. Bauer and four other
Yankee players faced stern dis
ciplinary measures by Stengel
for staying out beyond the cur
few prescribed for "good" ball
players while celebrating Mar
tin's 29th birthday until the
early hours of Thursday morn
ing. The climax of the party was
the slugging of Edwin Jones, a
42-year-old delicatessen owner.
Jones claims the slugging was
done by Bauer and threatens suit
of $250,000. Bauer denies it and
the Yankee management be
lieves him.
But Stengel and the top brass
are infuriated at the after-hours
partying. They feel that Martin
is the ringleader in these bright
spot escapades. And sources close
to the Yankees believe they are
ready to deal Martin away, even
though he long was regarded as
Stengel's favorite player.
A reliable report had Martin,
Andy Carey, Norm Siebern, Al
Cicotte and a Yankee farmhand
going to the Senators for Eddie
Yost and a pitcher either
Camilo Pascual of Pedro Ramos.
President . Cal Griffith of the
Senators is willing. And Charley
Dressen, front-office assistant, is
due in New York today to talk
business. :

880 and MaxTruex has bettered
the two mile time for the Tro
jans, which now stands at 9:02.3,
with a national record of 8:55.0.
The javelin mark, is also under
pressure from Voiles, who has
tossed 249-6 this spring for a
new collegiate record.
In addition to the sprints and
880, one of the best races was
expected to be the 440, where
UCLA's Russ Ellis meets Wash
ington's Terry Tobacco. The
same was true of the hurdles
where Trojan Bob Lawson and
Bruin Ken Thompson renewed
their battle with extra pressure
from Chuck Cobb of Stanford
and Oregon's Jack Morris in the
lows.
