When persons ask me if it is
safe to be a vegertarian, I have
to ask, "What do you mean by
v e g etarian
ism? Do y o u
live onnoth
ing but veget
ables, fruits,
and nuts or do
you add eggs
and milk and
perhaps fish?"
The a d d ition
of eggs and
milk to any
diet will help 'tremendously be
cause this will insure the per
son an adequate supply of good
protein, plus several vitamins.
Some of the proteins in cereals,
fruits, vegetables and nuts are
not adequate for nutrition. The
only reason that people get by
eating them is because -one food
supplements another.
I admire people who can be
so high-principled as to deprive
themselves all their days of the
pleasure of eating the meats
which most of us so enjoy, and
which are such good sources of
the protein that all of us need.
Sometimes, , however, I am am
used when I see a woman veg
etarian who tells me that man
has no right ever to kill an
animal, and I note that she is
wearing shoes made of leather,
she is wearing gloves and a belt,
and perhaps is wearing a full
length mink coat. Fortunately,
consistency is not a common hu
man trait!
A famous dietitian once sum
med up vegetarianism by say
ing that one can maintain health
on such a diet but to do it suc
cessfully one should have more
knowledge of dietetics than most
persons have. This is particular
ly true when one is trying to
bring up a .child on a vegetarian
diet. The growing child greatly
needs plenty of good protein.
Proteins are the esential building-blocks
out of which a body
is made. I, personally, would
fear to bring up a child on a
vegetarian diet, even with all
my wide knowledge of dietetics.
To show what can happen,
one of my classmates in high
school was born into a vegetar
ian family. Although she was
thin, she managed to get by
until she tackled a strenous scien
tific course in college. Then her
nutrition failded, and she be
came tired and weak and unable
to work. Ter physician there in
sisted on her eating meats and
poultry and fish, and with this
she rapidly gained in weight
and strength and lost her old
fatigue. After that, she lived into
her 70s and . never had any
trouble.

Aline Mosby Von S t r O-
heim, who died Sunday in Paris
was one of the great directors of
the '20s. Film experts rank him
with D. W. Griffith, Charles
Chaplin and Orson Welles as a
controversial individua list,
pioneer and fine creator.
He was years ahead of his
time. He was a pioneer in in
troducing stories concerning sex
including rape, orgies, Freudian
sex symbols and fetishes, illicit
affairs and passionate love scens.
Reels of "The Merry Widow,"
"Greed" and other Von Stro
heim masterpieces were chopped
by censors, but those that re
main still seem daring today.
In his last silent, "Queen Kelly,"
never released, a queen marched
naked through her place wearing
only a white cat on her shoulder.
Absolute Realism Demanded
With "Greed" in 1921 Von
Stroheim became the first dir
ector to demand absolute real
ism. For seven months he filmed
the picture in an actual San
Francisco apartment house, a
novelty at the time. To get his
stars (Zazu Pitts, Gibson Gow
land and Jean Hersholt) in the
mood he made them live in the
apartment.
The rest of the film was shot
in Death Valley in sizzling tem
peratures. Fourteen technicians
became ill. Hersholt- lost 27
pounds and wound up delirious
in a hospital. Day after Day Von
Stroheim made Hersholt and
Gowland crawl, blistered and
bleeding, over the scorching
desert.
Nowadays fans are used to
three-hour epics, but when Von
Stroheim tried to make films of
that length his bosses merciles
sly cut them in half. His "Greed"

litter strewn by careless and
selfish people along highways
and in public parks.
US homes at the end of 1956
had 18.4 million automatic heat
ing .units, an increase of 8 per
cent over 1955.

Practices Lead to Banishment
His "Foolish Wives" was
Hollywood's first million-dollar
movie. But his publicity as an
expensive director backfired. He
became known as extravagant
and temperamental. By 1930 he
couldn't get a director's job in
Hollywood. He was hired only
as an actor and in 1936 sought
a career in France.
Von Stroheim often was bitter
about his banishment as a dir
ector. He recently quoted figures
to show his money-making
movies were actually not waste
ful. When he returned here : to
1949 for his last Hollywood role,
"Sunset B o u 1 evard," he was
asked how he felt about his
"comeback." Von S t r o h e im,
monocle, cigarette holder and
all, drew himself up proudly and
said, "I don't need to come back.
It just means the movies are
coming back!"
