    Anglers Fishing for
Five Dollar Bills
Hullville,. Calif. TP Anglers
re fishing for trout and five-
dollar biHi in Lake Pillsbury
these days.
Resort owners in this section
of the Redwood Empire put up
the money for those who catch
one of the specially tagged trout
among the 3,000 tagged by the
California Department of Fish
and Game. At the start of the
eason, the department planted
13,000 catchable trout in the lake
The trout season began at Lake
Pillsbury on April 26. However,
the season will not open on the
lake's tributaries and the Eel
river above and below the lake
until May 30.
Resort owners in the area are
cooperating with the department
to obtain accurate measures of re
turn of catchables to the sports
man's creel.

A caveman writes: "Now that
you ve discussed the world s
highest points, why not write
about the lowest points on the
earth. Including caves. And what
are the greatest depths t& which
man has descended?"
I'll buy that.
The deepest spot on earth Is
in the Pacific ocean, 200 miles
southwest of Guam, at 35,640
feet. In the Atlantic, the deep
est spot is in the Puerto Rican
trench at 28,200. In the Indian
the Sundar trench is 17,850 at
the deepest.
As for lakes, the deepest in
the world is lake Baikal, central
Siberia, which .attains a depth
of 5,650 feet. In the U.S., Crater
Lake, Oregon, is deepest with
2,000 feet.
The lowest spot In continental
America is within 85 miles of
the highest spot in the U.S., Mt.
Whitney, in Death Valley with
a minus 282 feet. In nearby
Greenland, a depression of 1,200
feet below sea-level ' has been
discovered recently which may
well mean that the world's
greatest land depths (although
covered by ice) may exist here.
The deepest recognized land
depth at present is the Dead
Sea, at 1,286 feet below sea level.
Now, what- is man's deepest
penetration of the earth's crust?
An oil well being drilled in Pla
quemines Parish, Louisiana, lo
cated 35 miles south of New Or
leans, at 7 a.m., Nov. 9, 1955,
surpassed the previous record of
21,482, and then continued to a
depth of 22,570 feet a dis
tance of 4 miles and 1,450 feet.
The temperature at the bottom,
incidentally, was 350 degrees
Fahrenheit.
The world's deepest mine is
the, Ooregum section of the
Champion Reef Gold mine in
the Kolar gold field, Mysore
state, India, where the Auxil
iary Main Winze is 9,811 feet
below the surface.
Deepest Anthracite Mine
In contrast, the deepest an
thracite coal mining operation
is the Askan shaft of the Glen
Alden Coal company, near Nan
ticoke, Pa., at 2,140 feet. The
deepest soft coal mine shaft is
1,004 feet at the Assumption
Mine, 10 miles north of Pana,
111.
The deepest water well in the
U.S., incidentally, was drilled in
19.42 -at Ellsworth Air Force
base, Rapid City, So. Dak., that
went to a depth of 4,645 feet.
Don't say the Air Force gives
up easy. But as water wells go,
a much deeper one exists in
Springleigh, near Blackall,
Queensland, Australia, which is
7,009 feet deep; It was completed
in 1921.
Now how deep has man gone
down. The deepest salvage op
eration ever reported was con
ducted by the British admiralty
ship Reclaim in Osiofjord from
which on June 28, 1956, Boat
swain G. M. Wookey descended
to 1,060 feet. ,
In the bathyscaphe, the deep
est penetration made into the
ocean depths occurred Feb. 14,
1954. Lt. Cmdr. Georges S. Houe
and Lt. Pierre . Henri Willm
went down to the ocean floor
off southwest Dakar, French
West Africa, to a depth of 13,287
feet (2.52 miles). It remained at
that depth for 36 minutes.
Depth of 535 Feet
In a flexible diving suit, Pet
ty Officer William Bolland of
the British Royal Navy, made
the greatest descent to date at
Loch Fyne, Scotland, Aug. 28,
1948. His depth was 535 feet.
As for caves, quite likely the
deepest one is the Gouffre Gach-
tiaggia Bella system in 'the
French - Italian Maritime Alps
which may be more than 4,300
feet deep. However, the deep
est official penetration yet made
occurred in the Puits Berger,
near Grenoble. There in July,
195o, six French speleologists
descended td a depth of 2,959
feet. The following year a pene
tration of 3,050 feet was report
ed. But the record for getting the
closest to the earth's core goes
to none of these men. Due tp
the flattening of the poles, this
honor goes to the North Pole
explorers Robert E. Peary, the
Negro Matthew Henson, and the
Eskimos Ooqueh, Ootah, Eging-
wah, and Seegloo who reached
the North Pole, April 6, 1909,
and it is nearly 9,000 feet nearer
to the earth's center than the
South Pole which is on the Ant
arctic plateau.
