friend Harry acquired a gross
of coach lamps, the brass-bound
kind, brand new since they were
still in their original wrappings
of some 60 years ago.
I don't know what he paid
for them except that it was less
than a dollar apiece.

what he was going to do with

"Sell 'em, I guess," he said.
"You want to buy them?"
I declined.
"I like coach lamps," he said.

The past summer I sold him
a pair of brass-bound lamps with
six-inch bell-mouth lenses and
big round side . glasses. They
were dirty, both the metal and
the glass, but he willingly gave
me $4 for the pair. I thought

lot of other firms, would still be
carrying mail at a profit if our
goverment hadn't put them out
of business, by law, back in
1883.
"Think of it. Boyd's City Ex
press operated over 50 years be
fore it was put out of business."
In an attempt to get my chol
eric friend off the subject I
asked how much he thought he
would get for the stamp.
"I'll ask S100," he said. "It
catalogues at $75, but I'll let
them beat me down to $75, or
even a little lower."
He sold it for $60 within the
week.

said, "I'll be glad to take them
off your hands, at the same old
price."

times myself . . . Well, how
much is it worth?"
When I told him it was worth
$75, which represented a fair
profit on his investment, ne
wasn't satisfied.
"It ought to be five times as
much," grumbled Florian, tak
ing it back.

Rural Reflection: Some of the
surprises of gardening were Mrs.
Edna Sawyer's recently, as she
anxiously watched a pan of wet
sand expecting to see hybrid
zinnia plants shoot up. Two
bright young plants have come,
but they are fir trees.
VA Starts Study
Of Sarcoidosis
In US Hospitals
The first cooperative research
attack on a mysterious tubercu
losis-like disease called sarcoi
dosis has -been initiated by the
Veterans Administration, S. T
Brannock in charge of the Med
ford VA office, stated today.
CA hospitals at Atlanta, Ga.,
Dallas, Tex, Madison, Wis., New
York City hospital and Washing
ton D.C., have begun a study to
learn the cause arid nature of
sarcoidosis so steps can be taken
to prevent and treat it, Bran
nock said.
Volunteer for Study
A doctor at each of the hos
pitals has volunteered to study
patients with sarcoidosis, not
only clinically but with equal
emphasis on factors such as en
vironment, occupation, eating
habits, and self medication. All
factors which may furnish a
lead to solving the cause of the
disease will be investigated.
Sarcoidosis is more severe
and j.iuch more wide-spread
disease than has been believed,
a preliminary study by a four-
man medical team from VA cen
tral office in Washington, D.C.,
shows.
It occurs most frequently in
persons between 20 and 40
years of age and produces symp
toms often confused with tuber
culosis, fungus diseases, and can
cer, Brannock said.
Growths Occur
The growths or nodules char
acteristic of sarcoidosis usually
occur in th-j lungs but can occur
in any. organ of the body.
