Herb Score
On Disabled
Player List
Cleveland (U.R) The Cleve
land Indians elected to pay a 30
day "penalty" in exchange for
Herb Score's career today as in
creasingly optimistic reports in
dicated the stricken southpaw
pitcher may be back on the fir
ing line by June 15.
Struck in the right eye by a
batted ball Tuesday night. Score
was placed on the Indians' dis
abled list Wednesday by General
Manager Hank Greenberg, who
nevertheless conceded, "Herb
possibly might be abe to pitch
before 30 days."
Whenever a baseball player is
place on the disabled list, he
must remain inactive for 30
days. This means that Score will
not be able to rejoin his team
mates until June 8.
In announcing his decision to
place Score on the disabled list,
Greenberg said, "The doctors tell
us that . . . Herb will be unable
to pitch for at least three weeks.
In this instance, we cannot think
of one or two ball games but
only the future health and wel
fare of one of baseball's best per
formers." Satisfactory Progress
Meanwhile, Dr. Charles
Thomas, a Cleveland eye special
ist, examined Score again Thurs
day night at Lakeside hospital
and reported "satisfactory pro
gress," although he cautioned
"We do not yet know the condi
tion of the retina."
The specialist also indicated
that if Score survives the injury
with some vision in the eye, the
injury should not affect his ca
reer. He said all examinations
thus far have indicated that Score
will be able to see out of the in
jured eye.
"The question now is what, if
any, will be the percentage of
loss of vision," Thomas added.
Thomas postponed an X-ray
examination of Score's right eye
Thursday until either today or
Saturday.
The 23-year-old "million dol
lar" strikeout artist will be kept
in a quiet and darkened room
until the eye clears sufficiently
to permit an examination of the
retina. If there is no detachment.
Score could be released from the
hospital quite soon.
World Dash
Mark Could
Be Broken
By HAL WOOD
Fresno, Calif. (U.R) Three
of the greatest sprinters in the
world go to their starting blocks
in the West Coast Relays here
Saturday night and, if everything
goes right there could be an
electrifying new world record in
the 100-yard dash.
"We've got the three fastest
men in the world in Bobby Mor
row of Abilene Christian; Lea
mon King of California and Mike
Agostini of Trinidad and Fresno
State," says meet Director Flint
Hanner. "We have the fastest
track in the world."
Patton Record Threatened
"Now if we can only come up
with the'perfect weather and a
perfect start to round things out
we might hit that 'impossible'
mark of 9.2 seconds."
Morrow will be favored to win
the race, because he is the type
of man who runs to beat the op
position as he proved by win
ning both the 100 and 200 meter
events in the Melbourne Olym
pics and if a man ever will be
pushed, this should be the time.
Fresno, Calif. (U.R) Things
were smooth again with the West
Coast relays today after a timely
coincidence soothed the injured
feelings of San Jose State and
nipped a feud of Western schools
in the bud. '
San Jose State withdrew from
the meet, oldest in the West,
Thursday in a huff after its
sprint relay team was assigned
to competition against club and
service teams instead of against
crack college and university
teams.
However the University of
California withdrew from the
sprint relay for other reasons and
the lane this opened was assigned
to San Jose State. The Spartans
then agreed to compete.

Chinese Communists
Find Rare Tree Varieties
Tokyo (U.R) Communist
Chinese experts have found rare
varieties of trees known to have
existed a million years ago,
Radio Peiping said today.
The broadcast heard here said
the trees were found in south
ern Yunnan province on the bor
der of the tropical monsoon belt.
It said the species have become
extinct in most parts of the world
since the glacial invasion.
The Bureau of Public Roads
estimates there will be 81 mil
lion motor vehicles on the high
ways by 1965, or 16 million more
than are on the highways today.
